Hey,

I'm a 24-year-old guy who's basically new to motorcycles, though I passed the MSF class in 2005. I've done a lot of research on the KLR 650, and I think I'm about as close as I can be to saying it's the perfect bike for me without having actually ridden it.

I'm 6'6", so my primary consideration with any bike is whether it'll fit me. The KLR 650 was one of the most common bikes turned up by my Google searches for motorcycles for tall guys. I was intrigued by it from the beginning, and the more I researched it, the more I liked it. It seems to suit my personality and style as well as my body: the functionality, the simplicity, the absence of flash and glamour (I strongly dislike Harleys), the reliability, and the all-terrain aspect really appeal to me. I don't have an interest in dirt biking per se, but there are a lot of days when nothing entices me as much as throwing some food, a book, a flashlight, and some very basic camping gear into a pair of saddlebags and melting into the wilderness. It'd be great to have a bike that could handle this sort of thing.

Now I'm just keeping my eyes open for a used one. There was one in the classifieds a few days ago, but someone else beat me to it. Anybody in Utah trying to get rid of yours?

Welcome to the forum Cabron, good luck with your search, you might give Craigslist.com a try, searching your area and surrounding states. Keep us posted with pics and reports on camping trips. Do a search of the mods and wrenching area and get a good idea of all the things you can do to your bike to customize it for your needs. The ONE main thing you need to consider doing if your bike has not had it done is to do the 'doohickey'. Do a search on that and you will have a better understanding of the term and what needs to be done. It is not a difficult thing to do, as a matter of fact I will be doing my sixth one this morning.

Welcome. As a first bike it is a good choice.Low maint,plenty of parts and aftermarket parts available.Not a speed deamon but enough to go across the USA with no problem.But whatever you do,get riding gear.You already have a big plus being in Utah,great dual sport country

I think camping and the KLR go hand in hand. I need to do more of it.

Welcome to the wonderful 2 wheel world. Always ride with safety in mind and you'll have a long safe journey. I applaud you on your wise decisions for the klr but I hope you get a chance to also own a street oriented bike like a sport bike and you will also discover a whole other beauty in motorcycling. I also have a KLR650 and a sportbike (Hayabusa). Hopefully, I'll be adding a sport tour bike in the near future. Ride like the cagers are trying to get you.

Tons of people over 6ft tall ride sportbikes. Handlebar risers and lowering footpegs help make riding more comfortable. Some sportbikes are more comfortable than others. At least try a few. A good compromise would be the BMW GT sport touring bike. Stop by a bmw dealer and they usually can arrange a test ride. I was amazed at how something so big is sooooooooo agile.

Can you lower the footpegs and raise the handlebars on the KLR, too? I know it's a good-sized bike already, but I seem to have a hard time finding anything that fits me as-is.

Carbon, Welcome to the forum......

If are looking to buy a KLR, this is right place to ask about it........

Now look into the monitor, closer, closer....... are feeling sleepy yet ??? OK you are in the zone !!!!!!

Now go out buy the KLR and get it over with.......... it's the only bike that you can "farkel" to death and not have over kill.

Ask any one on the forum..... there is always some little thing you can add, even if you think you have done it all.

Did I mention the KLR is bullet proof,,,,,
