Hi, my name is jeremy, I'm from northwest indiana! I came across a sweet deal on a super clean 1993 klr 650 with 20k on it and have always wanted one, the thing that is really holding me back is the age. Is definitely wanna look into some aftermarket for it, and while researching, it seems a lot of parts are for 1996 and newer.. Could use some input from some more knowledgeable guys than me.

NWI_Jeremy, most aftermarket accessories fit Generation 1 (through 2007 model year) universally.

Some OEM parts have been upgraded over time (e.g., clutch disks increased in number), but most revised parts are "downward compatible," i.e., will fit earlier model KLR650s (One example: The "doohickey, or idler shaft lever.). Some parts are NOT downward compatible, like latter-day pistons and piston rings, unless they're installed as SETS (piston AND rings).

Thus, I should think condition, not age/obsolescence/superseded parts, should pace your decision, but--that's a decision only you can make.

Thank you man! That was kinda what I was thinking but it just kept throwing me off, especially after reading about the clutch gaining a plate and the other cmchanges made in 1996, I'm going tomorrow to look at the bike and if all is good I'll report back with a shiny new (to me) klr! Plan on a very detailed build this winter

That's not old! If it had 100K I might call it approaching tired.
