Hi folks, I am in HRM and would look forward to meeting some other KLR owners from this neck of the woods. I've already met 2 so far and we've had some good trail rides together (pipeline, Waverly and Porter's Lake). It would be good if we could get a weekly ride going and see who comes out. I see you guys driving around the city, so come on out and get a little dirty. These trails are not hardcore trails, but they're good enough to get the off road juices flowing! :60:

Rides

I am not far away.. I am in Bridgewater, and would love to discover some of the places that you city folk are riding. This is my first season on a duel sport, and have been spending a lot of time exploring the Bowater Properties. I have been accessing the woods between Chester and Hubbards.
I am wondering if you were able to arrange a weekly ride.

Hey Al that would be good, I've recently lost 3 riding buddies to various circumstances. 1) Had a factory skid plate on his bike, hit a rock and tore his oil drain plug out (he's done for the season) 2 ) had his first baby, and has somehow prioritized child reaaring over KLRing... go figure and 3.) sold his KLR for some bizarre reason. A couple of weeks ago I went for a ride with the BMW owners group, a good group of guys from Halifax (a lot of them have other dual sport bikes as well as beemers). We went to Coldbrook, then drove across the province on an old railway bed, coming back to town on the opposite highway. It was a very tame ride, but the scenery was nice and the guys were good heads. I couldn't help swivelling my head around and going exploring everytime we passed a gravel pit or a single track heading into the woods...LOL. So drop me an email at [email protected] and let me know when you'd like to meet up and we'll make it happen! I would be curious to do a bit more exploring on the trails you talked about at Bowater. I think that's the system I entered a few times at the Pockwock Watershed area, and did some exploring.
(this response was cut and pasted from the other forum that you sent me a message in, Im a lazy typist)

Hey we should definitely get together for a ride. I'm from the Pictou county area, but venture down to Halifax a fair bit. Obviously not prime riding season right now, but in two months or so I'll probably start.

Hey there 646bph, RobMac and I have managed to ride together, and we are both willing to travel. I am in Lunenburg County, but am very interested in exploring other parts of the province. I was out for a ride 2 weeks ago, but did not venture off road. Do you have any favorite spots to ride in your area? Spring is coming soon I hope!

I've only lived in Nova Scotia for about 10 months and can't believe how lucky you guys are for trails and good (although bumpy) roads. So every time I go out on the trials I go somewhere different. I was really tempted to go for a quick ride today, being 2C outside and all. But decided against it since there was still ice on the roads in the shaded areas, can't wait for the temp to get closer to 10 or so.

Pictou county is full of great coastal roads, gravel roads and a lot of unexplored and sometimes uncharted (according to google anyway) trails. The logging roads to the South of New Glasgow are fantastic and my favourite so far. But they are often very remote and you'd be lucky to see anyone else out on them, so I take it careful when by myself to avoid any serious injuries out in the boonies.

On a different note, what's the best store in the province for motorcycle gear. I just went to Procycle (Halifax) today and they had a good selection, but the prices where a bit higher than I'm used to. I like going to Halifax over Moncton, but Atlantic Motorplex in Moncton has better selection, especially in the off-road side of things.

Hey 646

I almost went out for a ride myself today, it was a mild one. I'm from Pictou County, grew up there and biked a lot around Lyons Brook, Scotsburn, Durham, Green Hill etc. I'm actually in the process of trying to sell my dad's house in Pictou, so I'm there more often than I'd like to be, trying to tie up loose ends after his passing in 2013. My email is now [email protected] I wish I knew a bit more about how those google circles work...might be a good way to link up. I'm always looking for additional riding buddies, so let's keep in touch.

And as far as the best bike shop...to buy stuff, I don't know. I kinda just try them all. Halifax Motorsport is OK, has some good deals. I really like the guys at RPM, I can go there on my lunch hour and browse, I got some good deals on pants and boots there when they had their Black Friday sale.
I just got a set of handlebar risers at Procycle, and a new (taller) windshield at Freedom Cycle, I am thinking about putting them on the bike tomorrow, which may mean a small test ride if it's not freezing.

Yeah we should hit the trails some time for sure, you probably know them a lot better than I do, not really using google circles though. I meant to check out Freedom Cycle today, but unlike the other stores they don't have a very good website so I couldn't really tell if they actually had a good selection of gear or not. I'll have to check them out and this RPM place sometime.

Bad luck for your buddy with the skid plate/drain plug issue. I replaced the stock skid plate with aluminum last summer after it cracked, glad I did.

646bph, where did you move from? I am a familiar with Pictou County, though not for riding. My wife's family lives there, and we share a summer cottage in River John. When I am shopping, I tend towards ProCycle and atlantic motoplex for most gear type stuff. I go to Freedom Cycle for parts type stuff. I have tried to ride a few times this winter, there tends to be a lot less snow down this way.....usually.

Moved from Southern Ontario, but I didn't have a bike there. A lot of grid pattern farm roads all flat, straight and boring. Plus ridiculous insurance rates. Cheaper insurance more than makes up for the expensive utilities, beer and gas here.

Hey 646 and Al

First, what's the 646bph mean?? Now that we have that nagging question out of the way, this sounds good for the upcoming ridin season. Now all we have to do is find a few more guys and we'll have a crew to ride with. I moved back here from Windsor (Southern ON) where I lived for 15 years, I'm originally from NS and that was bizarre Al, when you mentioned your cottage in River John, my family's cottage growing up was on Caribou Island, not far at all from yours. I went to school and was friends with quite a few River Johnners. I'm trying to sell my Dad's house in Pictou, right now, so it sounds like we could all easily meet in the Pictou area at some point.
Al, didi you get my text about the new farkles/mods I got?
Conti TKC 80 tires (both)
Givi engine guards,
Tall windshield,
pivot pegs,
progressive fork springs,
handlebar riser
Stainless steel brake lines (front).
I'm thinking of using the KLR more for dualsport touring, logging roads and the like, and I am still looking at buying another , more nimble bike for playing around on. I've looked at a lot, most recently a WR250, but also looked at the KTM's and Huskies. Perhaps cheaper is better, at least initially, a used WR250 rather than a KTM 300, I just want something I can play in the woods with, but still drive on the road to get there. And I want it to be less work then throwing my KLR around, or worse, picking it up 5-6x in an afternoon. I'm going to get in touch with Lawrence and Kyle, 2 other KLR guys who I used to ride with last summer and perhaps we can use this forum as a hangout for the time being.
Later guys,
Rob

It's just an anonymous name I came up with years ago that's never taken on any forums, but you can call me Bernardt instead. (It's actually based on a room number and building name that I used to live in).

Should for sure hit some trails sometime. Had the bike cover off today and did some maintenance, but the roads are still too shitty for a ride.

I usually don't hit trails that are too challenging, but they often start easy and end up in a bog.

Hey guys, Dualsport.ca is a local forum, with more Nova Scotia specific trails, trips and fellow KLR guys. Check out some posts by Jacob_ns he's got some good maps of the Bowater trails (where Al and I went last year. Kelsow (site moderator) has some great maps of trips around the province as well, and some great photography. It's worth checking out.
646-your bog reference sounds waaayyy to familiar, I almost gave my self a heart attack pushing the big green monster out of a bog last summer, me and another guy got stuck and kept saying....it must end soon, lets keep going...you probably know the rest!

There is a Horizons Unlimited Event happening in Nova Scotia! You can check it out on their website.
I expect that I will check it out. Anyone else?

I did get you message, but I have not been getting any notifications from this site. Is there something that I did not do correctly? As I said before, I am looking forward to being a doohickey assistant.

Nova Scotia Tech Day...

Al,
I replied on the other thread in this forum.
And also, if you haven't yet...check out the NSdual sport.ca forum. I've generated some interest in having a "tech day" in the spring, where there'd be a variety of bikes present. There seem to be 2 guys that host them, and one lives down your way!

Hello, moved to Greenwood in august of 2015, any NS riders still around? I know I see at least one KLR on base and a few on the highway every now and then, as well as at the Wharf Rat Rally.
