Im very happy with my new KLR but have an urge to do somthing to it.

I have thought about changing the exhaust. I found this one on ebay:

It appears as though its a slip on. I youtubed it but could only find o series while this one is an R series.

Questions from the newb:

#1 Can I do this myself in my garage? :ashamed0001:

#2 Would I have to re-jet or anything more than just swapping it out?

#3 when I see people say re-jet, what does that mean? lol

#4 Will this in any way add ANY performance to the bike as advertised or simply make it sound a little better?

#5 what does slip on mean? just nuts and bolts?


I do plan on getting better road tires but will burn off the stock ones I have first.


All thoughts/opinions welcomed..

From what I understand, is that for every $100 you spend, you get 1 hp. I have an '05 that I have owned since it was new, and was very happy with the way it performed. I came across a deal I could not pass up, and put a LeoVince system on. (Mid-pipe, and can) My requirements were, that I did not want to re-jet the bike, and wanted performance to boot. I got that with this system, and I am very happy with it so far.

I would suggest that you look further into this system to see if re-jetting is required. I personally do not want mess with the carb to make the exhaust work for possible 1-1.5 hp gain. I am sure that other memebers have different views on this, and will pipe in (pun intended).

On the other hand, if I were wanting to put some money into the bike, I would focus on other issues that would give me a little more peace of mind. Such as, The "Doo", or at least a torsion sping. May-be progressive spings for the front end, or a fork brace.

The bike is YOUR set up, on what you want to do, this is only my $.02.

yes you can do it. one clamp and one bolt. biggest benefit of the exhaust it getting rid of the weight of the stocker. the aftermarket ones are MUCH lighter. i have a jardine and found it made a huge difference, but i also jetted at the same time. jetting means that you take the carburetor out remove some little bits with a screwdriver and put some new little bits in. in combination with more airflow, you can manage to squeek out another pony or two. you can u tube it or search this forum for pictures. playing with a carb is a little more technical than swapping out the exhaust. you can also have a look at the 22 cent mod or klx needle instead of jetting. you might get away with not having to mess with the carb much other adjusting the mixture screw (easy to get at with out taking carb off). maybe pick up a clymer manual. lots of stuff on u tube.
have fun. thats why they cost 5 grand not 15.

If a "way cool exhaust note is important to you, go for it.

If $ 150 fits in your priority-of-modifications cost/benefit priority as number one, by all means!

Don't know if you give up the USDA Forest Service-approved spark arrestor with this can, but . . . if so, maybe the privilege of riding on National Forest roads and trails is unimportant to you.

Each individual's priorities may differ; a bash plate to protect the plumbing, and nerfs to protect the radiator/tank/plastic ranked higher in my case.

Trick exhaust? Forget about it, but that's just me. If you want your KLR to sound like a GP racer at Monza, more power to you! (Were I so inclined, I'd look into jetting fuel-enriching the mixture, but again--that's just me!)

Your bike, mod it as you see fit.

Now, about the PCV valve mod, . . . oh, never mind!

Thr LEXX is a great exhaust at an even greater price. If you run it with the quiet core installed you won't need to do any carb changes.
After some you-tube videos I do think this is the one I would choose. The ebay ad says no jetting required(hoping thats true). I will think about it for a few days before making a decision.

I assume I will know right away if it needs re-jetting because of how it performs or what?

So the benifit would be a few less pounds and an extra horse or two?

Plus it would sound a little more appealing?

I will ride this on the road 90% of the time if not more. I bought it mainly because of its good record and because it fits me well. I am 6"7 and a new rider. Although people tell me its not a beginners bike it is for me. I like that the throttle is forgiving. I weigh 260 or so but with the spring and damping setting increased I think I will put off springs, ect for now.

Also, ad says: Includes Forest Service approved Quiet Core Spark Arrestor Insert that brings sound levels down below 96db.

I know I ask alot of questions but be assured you all have helped me. Why is the KLR pipe shaped with the pregnant belly underneath while other after market pipes and simply straight?

And, re-jetting ain't that big a thing, if needed or even desirable. Your mod is mild; I'd be surprised if you need more carb tuning than shimming the needle, and backing out the fuel ("pilot air," Kawasaki calls it, but it's generically known as the fuel screw) screw to about 1.75 turns from soft bottom. (A common mod at this point is drilling the slide vacuum port to 7/64" diameter, improving throttle response (positive recommendation from me).)

Only additional tweak your system MIGHT need with the new exhaust, I'd think, is a slightly larger main jet, if performance or a throttle-chop plug reading says you need it (or if new-fangled exhaust gas analysis says so). The exhaust manufacturer may have some recommendations, you can ask 'em. (CAVEAT: Plug readings (examining spark plug color after wide-open throttle operation) may not be plausible nowadays, with the horrid ethanol-laced fuel available; my experience in search of the desired coffee-with-cream color may be obsolete.)

Your questions are good, and I claim no expertise; only sharing my experience and what the "big boys on the playground" say.

Your bike; mod it to suit YOU. 96 db max and a spark arrestor do not you an outlaw and unacceptably offensive noise-polluting motorcyclist make, IMHO. As primarily a road rider, you can probably do without a bash plate and nerfs.

I am guessing most of the KLRs already have an aftermarket air cleaner (free flowing) and modified air box (grommet removal) (free flowing).

Another concern is cost vs performance. A 685 kit can cost $300-$400. There is not an exhaust on the market than can come close to the performance of a 685 kit.

Actually removing or modify the OEM exhaust does make you an outlaw. There's an EPA stamp on the OEM stating as much. There are some municipalities that use the that stamp to enforce noise ordinances.

The bigger issue is noise. Motorcycle noise is the number one complaint of the non-riding public.

Motorcyclists have to have a change of mindset, don't change out your stock exhaust. All riders are adversely impacted by those that are loud.

There's really no performance justification for a KLR anyway, you turn a 35 horsepower 400 lb bike into a 37 horsepower 395 lb bike!

Aren't the bikes lean on the pilot circuit and rich on the main circuit?

I just put a jardine pipe on mine and rejetted with DJ stage one. Great sound and extra power across the board, you will be happy

Hello HI,

I brought that information up for discussion and to add reality to the hype. I am no expert and gain my information from others. The first mods I considered was Exhaust and Timing (automotive background) then I read and asked many questions. The first thing I did to my used KLR was the 22 cent mod and that made a very big difference. The second thing I did was adjust valves and that was a significant improvement. I have considered exhaust and might install the "Tom" exhaust after I have enough stable information on this 685.

Your information is important. Most KLRistas believe in the simple and sensible "22 cent mod". Does your information relate to the 22 cent mod?

I would like to hear from the riders that installed O2 sensors. They should have the correct information.

Hello,

First post on the forum, been lurking here a few weeks soaking up info since the purchase of an '07 a few weeks back.

My bike was stock when purchased, so i have been modding the last few weeks. So far i have installed Progressive fork springs and 10wt oil in the forks, a Moab rear shock, Eagle doohickey, Happy Trails fork brace, braided front brake line, Pro-Taper Contour bar with Acerbis guards, grease fittings in the rear pivot linkage, and exhaust and jetting mods.

I chose a FMF Q4 pipe mainly because i have used their pipes and silencers for years in MX bikes and have been pleased with their quality and durability. The Q4 is also rated at 96db, has a USFS approval and comes with a spark arrestor insert. I probably could have achieved much the same result with a hacked stock pipe, but i like the way the FMF looks and style points have to count for something. :) I installed a UNI filter, removed the intake snorkel/grommet, installed a KLX needle with the stock 148 main, drilled the slide lift hole 7/64" and went 2-1/4 turns out on the idle screw. Here at 3400' asl, it is still a touch lean at WOT, but overall i am quite pleased with this setup. I am going to try a 150 main and see how that does. My particular bike went from being barely able to lift the front wheel with heavy clutch abuse in 1st, to wheelying off the throttle in first and clutching it up in 2nd. Actual horsepower gains might be marginal but snap off idle and drivability in general are greatly improved.

With respect to the comments about loud aftermarket pipes, my little neighbor lady came out to see what i was up too when i was revving up my bike in the driveway with the new exhaust and she told me she was glad that my bikes are quiet, unlike those "choppers" that rattle her windows. So i guess mine is quiet enough. :46: My street bike is an '08 Suzuki B-King that has the stock exhaust and is about as loud as a good used sewing machine.

I'm running in the middle clip position at the moment, and it feels pretty good through the midrange, but right on top it feels a little thin. Plug is borderline, so im going to swap in a 150 and see how that behaves.

If you're using a 148 main jet with a KLX needle, it has got to be running too rich especially at 3500ft. The KLX needle is much rich than the stock needle. Typically a 140 main is used if ther are no airbox mods and 142 with airbox mods.

I would have thought so too, but indeed it is not. In fact, after swapping in a 150 main yesterday afternoon, i started seeing some color on the plug, but it is pulling very strong, running cleanly, no signs of an over rich condition any where in the rev range. The instructions that came from Schnitz with the KLX needle suggested sticking with the stock 148 jet or bumping up to a 150 in conjunction with airbox and exhaust mods.
