You may have noticed by now that many pics that are going through Photobucket as a 3rd Party Host, is not showing up on the forums (like below). This must have started a few days ago, but I didn't realize until just recently. You can catch up with what people are saying on photobucket's blog..........some extremely mad folks. I hope this all get's work out, because all my pics are hosted there.

They want you to pay now.
I saw this coming so I designed my forum to host our own unlimited number of images for its members so we wouldn't get caught in this mess with missing pictures in posts. Other forums should have done this long ago.

I read some of the blog and the new rules now.
I'm not going to make an account there to respond so I'll post here.

There are several website hosting companies that offer "shared hosting" at a MUCH lower cost than PB is asking.
All that's needed is to do some reading how to set up an account and learn ftp. Easy stuff. Many of the low cost hosts have unlimited storage but check their rules carefully.
This way YOU have complete control over your stuff and not inundated with with ads and popups/unders.

If anyone is interested and wants to learn more, I'm happy to help but PM me so it doesn't look like I'm spamming this forum.

I see these new terms of service listed in my Free Photobucket Account but the individual photos I posted are still showing in posts such as in the Blue Ridge Run Thread. There used to be two criteria to monitor: Storage and Bandwidth. I believe bandwidth usage arose from hosting/posting activity while storage was simply the megs/gigs of storage used by photo uploads. I can still see my storage usage, but the bandwidth usage feature is now gone, interestingly.

The amount and frequency of advertising popups in Photobucket has gotten ridiculous anyway. You can't even function in there anymore without constantly knocking down popups of the most stupid things.

Very strange, indeed. I am waiting to see what happens before putting my pics up on another site. If you click on where the pic would be showing, it takes you to the PB account and shows the pic, but of course not showing the pic on the forum

I still have all my pics saved at home. Here are a couple of responses from people:

Photobucket does have the legal right to change their TOU, and they do have the legal right to stop us from using third party hosting going forward, however, those of us who have been paying through the years, for the privilege of posting images on the net without having to worry about bandwidth, may have a legal case against them.
If they break images that have already been posted by their paying customers, they are removing a service that has already been paid for under the guidelines of their TOU when that service was rendered.
I know for a fact that it is NOT legal to remove services that have already been paid for, without issuing a refund. The bandwidth usage for any image that was posted from a PAID Photobucket account, prior to the change in TOU, had ALREADY been paid for

Seriously!!! You are really going to advertise as a free service and get people to download many years worth of pictures that are posted on forums and blogs then basically take them away and charge a $40 per month ransom. I have almost 10 years worth and over 4000 pics posted on forums and they have now been completely removed. Years of hard work eliminated with no warning whatsoever. Unbelievable yet not at all shocking in this day and age. Greed at it’s finest. At the very least you could have left pics already posted alone and then charge for any 3rd party pics after a specific date. If you had done it properly I’m sure many would have been willing to pay a small fee but $40 per month is completely ridiculous. So long Photobucket you won’t be getting one penny from me.

It was a free service, I think it's embarrassing how some people are losing their minds and throwing fits like their rights have been violated or something. It was free. You got more than your money's worth already.

We were freeloading in Photobuckets house, and they decided to kick us out. Simple as that. Life goes on.

Same thing is happening to paying customers, too. I thought they might have been hacked, because I couldn't see them offering a free service just to all of a sudden keep those pics on that service from being shared......and definitely not if you were paying for the service.

In a report by BBC news, PB said they sent out a message to users about the change in policy on June 26, so it's not a hack.
As for the paying customers, they have to upgrade to the service that allows third party linking.
Seems like the folks at PB just got greedy. $39 a month is way over the top.

I agreed to a terms of service agreement with Photobucket that provided me with free service (storage and hosting) and Photobucket with a private customer account to expose to it’s paying advertisers. Photobucket, like many other web offerings, made money off of me and the millions of other free account holders that signed up to their offering. That is not freeloading.

At the top of the page, when you open up their website, there is a message that says, 'We have updated our terms of service'. The last time I shared pics was for the Blue Ridge Run on 6/27. I must have missed the message then. It wasn't until I got back from a family vacation this past weekend that I noticed many of my pics were not showing up, though you can still click on them and see them 1 at a time. In the message that PB sent, it was last updated on 6/28. if I am reading it correctly, it still offers free service, but it is for storage only (2GB).....you cannot Link (share links to images) or 3rd Party Host (share actual pics images). There are fees to do that now.

This post says it all....

"People who have used Photobucket for hosting these images successfully for over 10 years are finding that they will have to literally start again with what for some, amounts to a lifetime's work."

But one expert said the public needed to be aware of the risks of relying on any free image service.

"There's a lot of websites out there looking for advertising, and there's a finite amount of advertising spending to go round," said Nigel Atherton, editor of Amateur Photographer magazine.

"And any photo gallery and storage site like this that relies on ads to offer a free service can only continue to do so if they have enough money coming in.

"So, if you put all your photos into any site or app like this where it's not clear how they are going to continue financing their business, then it could come back and bite you at some point in the future."

In my opinion, any business, ebay seller, photographer making money etc should be paying a fee. That should be considered part of the cost of doing business.

Still trying to wrap my head around this.
I pay the $28-$30 a year and haven't used a quarter of my allowed space. The account I pay for is not listed any longer, but I'm on an automatic auto-bill annually.

Here is an old picture from 2007 using the IMG tagged link that is still showing up by my pictures.

I never received their email on June 26 and it seems that all my pictures are still showing up.

I'm probably going to be moving over to smugmug though.

I'm on a free account with PB and all my links still work. I never got an email either. I've only used about about 5% of my allowable space, though. Seems like they are hitting the guys using up a lot of bandwidth first Can't really know for sure, though.

I came across this image hosting site https://imgbb.com/ and remembered I'd seen them years ago. There is apparently no storage limit and account is free with NO ads, allows 3rd party linking also.. I haven't been able to find a "catch" in this service. May be a good alternative. I'll be using it now for various images I want to link on the forums I visit.

OK guys, as someone who is only moderately computer literate;

1) there is no way to post a photo unless it's hosted on a third party site, correct?

2) Sure Photobucket can do what they want, but it still sucks....it will be a snowy day in hell before I pay them one single dime. I post pictures to help other people for free, I'm not going to start paying to do it.

3) So what are the free photo hosting alternatives out there?

Thanks,
Dave

There are modifications can be done to this forum to allow much larger photo storage for its members but alas, motorcycle.com charges for that convenience as well. Not much really, and it's a rather fair fee for lifetime though amount of storage is limited. I'm really liking the free one I linked to above. Pretty simple interface.
