Sorry no pics.

Since the GPS drawes little current I decided to wire it to the low beam. So far so good and no problems.

*** I'm not sure of the size of the connectors used below. I just used stuff I had laying around.

1. Remove windshild
2. Remove enough bolts so that you can get behind the low beam light
3. Unplug the low beam connector
4. Get your self two of these: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4X315

Attach a length of 6" wire to each. Strip about 1/4" of the wire insulation off the other end. Plug both to the brass terminals behind your low beam light bulb.

5. Get your self a couple of these: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/1A092

Attach a 6" length of wire to each of the above. Strip about 1/4" of the wire insulation off the other end.

Plug these into the two female connectors that use to plug into your light.

Strip off some of the wire insulation.

7. Now get yourself two of these: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/6VG23


8. Take one wire from steps 4, 5 and 6 and twist the ends together. Next screw the item from step 7 onto this twist of wires. If you tug slightly on the item from number 7 it should not come off.

repeat step 8 for the other three wires.

9. Now get yourself some black tape: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/2A225

Start from the wire nut (step 7) and wrap the tape around and around until two or three inches of the three wires are covered. Since there are two wire nuts you will have to do this again.


10. Mount your GPS to your handle bars (I mount my NUVI for less than $5) and run the car power adapter to the item listed in number 6.

11. Tidy things up by getting some small black zip ties and make sure nothing is loose. Tie those wires down.


12. Turn on your bike. Your GPS should be able to run and be charged by the low lights. It will also turn off when you turn your bike off.

13. Put everything back together. Fairing, windshield etc etc. A minor quip is that the rubber around the windshield bolts dry rotted and they were a bit of a pain to get back on.


I went for a 100 mile trip last night. The low beams worked and were as bright as usual. The high beams worked. My GPS not only worked but it charged as well.

About 1/2 days worth of work. Cost to me was free since I already had the parts.

I might be able to post a hand drawn schematic later if you guys are interested.

I previously wired my GPS directly to the battery but for a few different reasons I decided to change it. I believe this is a better set up because:
1 No rubbing of wire under seat or under the tank
2 The power now shuts off when I turn the bike off. Before the little indicator light on the cigarette terminal would stay on.

The down side of doing it this way is that the GPS is about the only thing I dare plug into the power adapter. Plug anything that takes more power than a GPS and you likely will blow a fuze. Since I don't run heated seats, grips or a vest this is a non-issue for me.

Disclaimer: I'm not an electrician. There might be better ways but this works for me.
