I have to chuckle when I look at motorcycle gloves. Most have a bunch of armor built into the top or back of the hand area.

This begs the question: Why the armor on the back side of the hand? If you fall you will put your arm out with palm down, right?

There was a time in my riding career when I was a dirt tracker where you needed this top side protection. This was in an arena where you would not find a KLR or similar bike. Ascot Park Friday night half mile races. The dirt had a lot of clay in it. At night it was a cushion surface so there were tons of little rock hard clay marbles and the occasional nut or bold mixed in. If you were battling several riders the roost from their back wheels was brutal. Corner speed was around 60 and the roost off the back wheel was faster than that. Imagine getting machine gunned by 150 to 200 mph rock hard marbles. This is why the knuckle protection was a necessity. And don't forget chest protection too. I used to have little red marks on my chest after the races from the roost. Some guys would wear chest protectors.

Gary Scott, Ron Moore, and Dave Aldana at Ascot in 1972. Check out the roost. Ouch!

Leather & Kevlar are about the only things that are flexible enough to use on the palm area.

Best to keep your hands, arms & legs tucked in.
