Rims, Rims, Rims... DANG RIMS!!! I want Black Ones, with Butterflies...

MYYYY Fault... I schpray-painted my Rims and they came out like Toney said they would... lookin' like S_ _ _ on a Stick MAAAN!!! SUKT! 12H labor (tedious labor at that). Okay, I learned... you gotta really, Really, REALLY prep Aluminum Rims and I do not care to learn that lesson again, so I will not be RE-painting my OEMs on my '03 KLR (that is currently an exploded diagram in the Garage).

Also MYYYY Fault... putting black rims on an old KLR is stupid/Stupid/STUPID!!! The Rims could EASILY cost more 'n the Scooter itself!!! So the idea of 'not' putting them on is very sensible and this is not a sensible choice. So that fact is not up for conjecture! Why Black Rims? Why not...
:)

I'm surfin' my backside off and not able to find someone's '12 KLR OEM Black Rims to schlap on mine, or any used Black Rims that will fit. The RimBuilders want me to take out a 2nd on my home for the financing, so that so faaaaaar is out.

Woody's Wheels has been suggested and I'm in communication with them.
eBay I'm checking (in fact, I have an 'Auto-Search' checking on 'KLR Rim' for me everyday... OhPlsGodOhPlsGodOHPLEEEEASE!
CraigsList won't let me do a 'World' search so I have to keep selecting cities and re-applying the search and so far, nothin' yet!
OfferUp sucks (no one on that site follows through), but I gotta try!
Hit a few KLR Forums to no avail. 'Guess I'll just have to keep checking 'til one/both show up for me.
Thoooooght of de- and re-lacing the Rims (then PowderCoat 'em as I should have in 1st place) and everyone says go ahead and get new Spokes/Nipples so that is not exactly cheap either.

BTW, my Budget is 'the least I can spend on accomplishing this'.

Any direction on KLR Black Rims, or networking to find some someone who wants to replace theirs so bad that they are reckless reckless with their pricing.

P.S. I slanted toward this in another Post and got some helpful feedback, and I thought I'd try once more with a more specific title for what I'm trying to accomplish.
Thanks!

You've got me confused with someone else. I never said anything about painting rims. My wife is the painting expert. If you want butterfly's on your rims I'll ask her for some advice.

If they’re black and it gets me a better deal, I can do Butterflies! I hadn’t thought of that, but I can definitely do it to save a penny or two!

Apologies for confusing names and handles; as one can imagine I am completely overwhelmed with not only this Project (‘03KLR, actually easy, but a lot of ugly ‘unwinding’ to do).
And now, this bean-ball to the head (stupid rims)…
And oh yeah, life doesn’t look to either side, nor behind, as it keeps on keepin’ on I’ve noticed.

Hey, ‘preciate the camaraderie, too... always ESPECIALLY enjoyed the Motorcycle ‘Fraternity’ (and missed it greatly while absent for a while hereNthere, especially of late).

NOPE! DIDN'T MISS 'EM...
BUT SUUUUUUUURE did forget to follow up with 'em!
When I first glanced I didn't even get that they were '12 OEM Black KLR Rims. Saw a coupla healthy dents and then 'got about my day'.
Since finally getting a minute I'm following up on:

Great tip from T.S. for Woody's - hoping to save a buck when they Powder MY Rims and re-lace and true them for about $675... Great Q but too rich for my blood. Awaiting a return message to see if they can re-use most/all of my Spokes/Nipples so then I'd be on the hook for only a few little bits along with a tear-down/build-up of each Rim prior to/after Powder-Coat including True&Balance and ready for rubber???

CyclesRUs via AMZ wants $850 for F/R after-market to replace OEMS altogether… yeeeeeeehhhhh NO!

Sun Rims, $684 for JUST the 2 Black Rims anodized Black… IT’S A KLRRRR!!!

Excel via eBay had a “Excel Black Rims + Steel and Zinc nippled spokes Kit” for $170 (bet I could pay more for upgrade on those nipples???) and then I would have to build/true the wheel (and buy a Spoke Torque Wrench… NO REALLY!). I’m awaiting a return message but I thiiiiiiiink I could get 2 Black Rims and 2 sets of ‘good’ spokes/nipples for like $375??? Yeh, it’s outta Taiwan but it says Excel! More homework to do here.

Dealership wants my Life Savings for 2 new OEM Rims. Joke's on them though... no life savings to speak of here. GUESS I SHOWED THEM HUH!!! oh, wait...

OfferUp/CL has me dealing with 2 Sellers of F/R OEMS; one at $300 and one at $100 (no return contact from her... hmmmmm), and if I do that, Bike’s on the road and I can really take my time and get good black rims on the cheap… jonesing to ride her now that she’s safe (well, almost… few more things to tighten up).

Local wants $120 to Powder 2 Rims already broken down. It might turn out to be the most reasonable route Powdering/Lacing mine (AFTER I CLEAN THE OLD PAINT OFF... which actually shouldn't be too hard SINCE IT'S ALREADY COMING THE HELL OFF!).... breeeeeathe...

Tracking eBay could be useful as these Dismantlers (and there are moreNmore of them every day) could be throwing up those OEM Black KLR Rims off 2012 (and others?) any day now… Right now the 2 Tom Schmitz shared are about $550 delivered… just add tars. The look a bit more dinged up than I’d hoped for so I’m not sold on ‘em yet. However, I did discover my ‘eBay Search’ prowess is not as good as I thought… I hadn’t found those on eBay ‘til T.S. fount and shared the link. Mooches GrasYourAss...

Would love it if this gal returned my outreach(es) about her OEM Rims/Tires and Front Forks for $100. I'd re-sell the Forks (mine just re-built with Progressives though no Emulators... BOOHOO) and break even moving me closer and faster to Black Rims BABY!!!

Just wondering, KLRCraig . . . what do you find compelling about black rims?

I have two bikes (not KLRs) from another manufacturer; one has silver-colored rims, and the other, black rims (with orange flashing). I remain indifferent to the appearance of the rims, myself; yet, I realize there's no accounting for artistic taste.

The previous owner installed "trick" wheels on one of these bikes; 19" F/17" R, VS. STOCK 21" F/18" R; these modification cost him a BUNDLE! The purpose for the modification, I think, was lowering the bike a little. I'd have to be very aesthetically sensitive to pay that kind of money for any KLR cosmetic I can imagine.

I’m in the market for a second set so I can simply change wheels for when I want to ride all street, and the other set for dirt.
Sure didn’t expect so much $ for used wheels.

Will gen 1 wheels mount up to gen 2?

Yes, with a rotor change. Get Gen 2 rotors and install them on the second set. Swapping rotors is a PITA.

It's like defending riding without a helmet; no matter what I will look like a boob in trying to explain why I want less safety in my life by occasionally choosing not to wear a BrainBucket.

D! You answered your own Q... I am 'aesthetically sensitive' indeed.
I'm also vain, though you wouldn't know it that I bought a Hyena-looking KLR that is not exactly the most sexy scooter around. I'm actually doing a MakeOver on her to see if, in addition to getting her SAFE (which to some degree she was not when I done brung her home) I hope to at least get her as pretty as she deserves to be.

IF (and I already have): I TBL (TrukBedLiner) the Body/Rack/Fairing (as per DPO again, though good bond, so I am just freshening up his work), and
IF (and I already have): I schpray HighHeatBlack on the Can since it was epoxyed with some sort of JBWeld around BOF ENDS (no refill of this baffle; once apart this beat-up DG Can is toast... I'll ride her until she cracks apart),
THEN: Black Rims'd be more 'over the top' and 'TRICK' than saaaaaaay, just 'cool'.

I can live with most of the 'Aluminum-colored' Frame (though blacked out some; SideStand, Pegs, Fogs/Rack, SkidPlate, and TouchUp of other black thangs along with tint of Turns and maaaaybe Stop light... undecided there; it'd be one coat but I like a BRIGHT RED TAILLIGHT!!! even if I am going Goth on this Bike).

I thoooooought I could do it on the cheap myself and guess what...
THEY LOOK LIKE S_ _ _ on a Stick Man... Chipped right off.
So suddenly budget is blown and I'm left with Paint-Removed-But-Scratched Aluminum Rims!!!
Kinda puts a wrench in the works don't it?!?!

SO!!!
I price Black Rims as my response to "RuhRoh Shaggy, WHAT NOW?!?!" to only be SHOCKED like a bolt of lightening going through me. I mean I knew it to be 'spensive but SHEESH!!! Arm and a Leg!!!

So, D, the answer is... maybe no BlackRims here now, as of the development below...

I DID SCORE THOSE OEM RIMS ON OFFERUP LAST NITE AT 12:05a (I remember 'cause that was my 'ETA text' to Seller). No Forks (ad showed Forks, but alas, not included) so $100 for Rims F/R... DEAL!!!
Almost makes the F'Up on RimPainting not hurt; certainly doesn't sting as much!!!

As my Original OEMs Poorly Painted are now devoid of Paint, I can just slap on the Rubber on my replacement OEMS tomorrow (at local shop) and have all the time in the world to maybe, maybe not get Black Rims at a later date and with far less time pressure... YaY!
And I'm thinking it'll be some form of scoring a deal on Spoke/Nipple Set for F/R, de-lacing mine, runnin' up to Powder-Coater local, and then re-lace them myself. Once I get them at least all torqued to the same spec I can then hit up my M/C Shop for a True/Balance as the Pro that I AM NOT!

All that to say, still want Black Rims, but not by spending over $500 on a Set!
And it makes no sense whatsoever to do so on a KLR...
TRUTH!!!

I will admit that I liked the look of the black rims on my KTM.......but as a "function over form" kinda guy and knowing that anything short of black anodizing would simply not hold up on a bike used offroad, I wouldn't consider trying to change the color of the rims on my KLR's ....now if I was going to replace the stock rims with some new Excel wheels, then sure (I still want that 18" rear!).....put no paint or other coatings would suffice.

2 cents,
Dave

Not even Powder?

Not even PowderCoating??? Had one Local PCer suggest Powder RimsNipplesSpokes covering only hubs/sprkt/rotor... that sounded WWWAAAAYYY cheesy looking... but then again, I've never seen that done before (or even simply all black RimsSpokesNipples for that matter).

This would have been likely my only F over F choice if you don't count simply 'cleaning' up with soap, sandpaper and paint a 'Form Over' choice. I mean as long as I've got the Bike apart and all, you know... The whole purpose of the teardown (after 100 mile shakedown ride) was ENTIRELY based on Function. I can allow a Form choice in that case, EVEN IF IT DOES TURN OUT TO BE OUTLANDISHLY EXPENSIVE. 'Just can't do it RIGHT NOW if as ugly-priced as it seems to be, soooooo....

Black Rims may be going the way of low priority with advent of cheap replacement OEMS I just got. That'll get the Bike on the road and then I'll see if I can schtumble on some BlackRims for a song and at my leisure. Before when I wanted BlackRims it was a seeming priority; thank goodness for resourcefulness!

BTW, I think it worth more 'n 2c the advice I've received from KLRForum.com... MOLTO BENE!!!

Powdercoating (which I'd suggest should be done on the rim by itself!) is better than paint but nowhere near as robust as anodizing. My KTM rims were Excel anodized units and I had to be a bit careful with them......I don't think powdercoating would hold up to a tire change or rocks biting them on the trail.

GRRRRRRrrrr... Okay, so NOW I'm apparently to really consider ONLY ANODIZED???

INTERESTING!!! I'll read up on PC v A and get some more hard data, although this DPelletier-Cat and his "KLR 3-Bike Race Team" I read about in another Post miiiiiiiiiight know what he's talking about. And since
SOME
OF
US
DON'T have a ChaseTeam shadowing us on our ‘Rides’,
then I'm to know how to 'FixAFlat' on the Trail, RIGHT!
I'd be mad enough on the Trail to EVER have a Flat in the 1st place, AND THEN TO REPAIR IT (MUST know this skill),
AND WHILE DOING THAT I GET TO SCRATCH MY BLACK ANODIZED RIMS, TOO!!!

That’s a “Big No-Can-Do”!!!

BTW, I think we ALL agree DPelletier that ALL MAINTENANCE/HACKS are PREVENTATIVE in nature and therefore done in the Garage, but we better be able to do a lot of that on the Trail - Justin Kase

Back to the BlackRims DrawingBoard I guess. MoreNMore it’s looking like I’ll, now at my leisure, breakdown and buildup my Original OEMs that the S _ _ _ on a Stick BlackPaint I applied has been “Aircraft Remover” removed.

And-Oh-By-The-Way… use, of course, Eye and Hand-Pro to be sure when using THAT stuff, AAAAAND…

Don’t forget your “Shirt-Pro”, too. A coupla times I felt an intense burning-sensation on my belly/chest and I’d go to scratch it whilst simultaneously Spraying THAT Schtuff on the Project(s) (FuelTank, too). Didn’t realize until the SECOND TIME that I mindlessly scratched at another burning spot (thought it a bug-bite in 105 degree Mesa, AZ Monsoon-Evening) that the Aircraft Remover had splashed off on my SweatyShirtless UpperBody and was BURNING ME.
YEEEEEEH… OUCH!!!

Shirt-Pro is now recommended on all Projects with AirCraftrRemover!!!
Cheap lesson learned considering…

I'M BAAAAAAAACK... 'been meaning to a while now, but, well, you know the rest!

I am trying to find an OEM Front Rim in Black for my now '09 ('still got my TruckBedLiner'd Black Mariah '03 though).

I've been checking CL, OfferUp, etc DAILY, and getting nowhere fast.

Some-a these dismantlers on eB are guilty of highway robbery with the prices they're asking... others have helped me out tremendously. I just can't pay that kind of money for a Rim that's worth more than the bike almost.

'Gonna hit up my local Dealership and start some more personal networking tomorrow (day off finally).

Thanks for the GREAT idea!
