Just got done with a 7hour ride from Roseburg, OR to Prairie City on my 07 KLR 650. I was hired by the Forest Service to fight wildfire and I figured I would make the trip on my bike. I did most of the trip between an indicated 75-80mph. This put my bike at 4.5-5k rpm, probably not ideal for the bike but it seemed to perform adequately. My fuel mileage was somewhere around 30mpg. I noticed a significant lack in power because of what I think is the elevation, shortly after I noticed the bog, I ran out of gas and had to switch to reserve. First time I’ve ever had that happen. I only had about 150 miles on the tank. That really surprised me. Think that sounds about right though for a KLR with 34k and probably almost 400lbs total? I’m about 160lbs plus all of my gear and the boxes and luggage. Bike seemed to be pretty stable at these speeds however I noticed a SIGNIFICANT reduction in my ability to corner... possibly a lack of break in on my Shinko 705’s but I think it was mostly the weight being up high. I totally blew a corner. Thank God that nobody was coming the other direction. A little bit sore because I had to practically sit on the tank. My Corbin seat didn’t get as utilized as I had hoped haha What do you guys think? Questions or comments?

I say good luck on your work. Looks like it will be a long fire season. I am a Logs chief on a type 2 team here in Oregon, NW#7. Haven't ridden my KLR that far yet, but understand blowing the corner. My KLR doesn't corner near like my R1200RT!! I am headed to John Day for the BMW rally last weekend in June, maybe see ya there!!
