Recently bought a used 2008 KLR650. Love the bike but when I bought it, it would start in any gear with the clutch in and in neutral clutch in or out. After a 1000 miles of use it just changed so the first start up in the morning it will start in any gear but thereafter it will only start in neutral (clutch in or out). The dealership suggested I replace the ignition (but the ignition works fine) and the independent mechanic I typically frequent suggested I keep using and see if it fails. My concern is that it will fail in the national forest that I frequently use that has no cell connectivity (with heat indexes now in triple digits).

Suggestions on how to avoid future hyperthermia?

Much thanks

Check the wires going into the neutral switch and make sure they're not frayed

I'll suggest that you may either replace the clutch lever safety switch or jumper it/bypass it. I think I remember others saying that a 5 or 10 amp Mini fuse will plug into the wire connector.
