I think this problem is difficult to describe, but I try.
I am a Norwegian KLR Tengai owner and the bike is from 1990 . It has runned 42000km.
Sometimes I have a sort of ticking noise from the engine and it seems to be unregularly. I am afraid that it could be something that comes from the often mentioned doohickey? I have tried to locate it with a screwdriver to the ear, but it is difficult to locate.
I also sometimes experience that the engine hesitates a little when I pull the throttle wide open. It is just a small second.
So folks, somebody with a good suggestion?; I think it is difficult with a noise that is described, but I try.

Just as hard as it is to describe the noise, It's just as hard to diagnose...

If you can pull the valve cover off I'd look at the compression release to see if it's coming loose, Look at the underside of the valve cover for marks where it could hit it.
Thats my best guess.. If you could find the noise either upper or lower on the engine it might help a bit more.

tommen, i just got a 1992 tengai, i am experiencing the same problems as yours. did you solve the problem? what could that noise be? delayed in power response? how did you get to fix it.
forgot to mention am from the philippines.
hope you can help me out on this. thank you very much.

I am sorry to tell you that I never managed to find out where the noise came from.
It seems to disappear by after a while so I did not take any notice but I wonder if it had something to do with the circulation pump on the the cooling system.
I has sold the bike and purchased a Kawa KLE650 Versys and is very satisfied with this bike. Good luck with Your Tengai and take care. Here in Norway it is winter and there are some months until the biking season is back.

tommen, its nice to hear from you. as of the moment the tengai is in the "hospital", me and my mechanic concludes the it was from the lose/soft spring of the KAC or the connecting rod and piston pin.
how is your versys? lucky for you guys out there, you can easy acquire big dual sport. here we have to buy it from gray imports. am planning to sell the tengai after a long ride and go for maybe a V-STROM or TRANSALP.
enjoy the winter, no riding for you til the seasons over.

I hope you get a fresh Tengai and solve the problem without to much difficulties.
The KLR650 Tengai is more "offroad" than Versys, because of the 21 inches front wheel .
But my Versys is a more powerful bike with much better brakes and comfort. I dont know the standard of the roads in the Philipines, but here in Norway we have to search for gravel roads in the forrests and the mountains. It is strongly forbidden to drive outside the roads and if you dont respect this and get caught you have to pay a lot of money to the police/government.
I did also look at the V-strom and think it looks like a good bike. I have not driven the bike so I have no experience with it. I owned a transalp a lot of years ago and I think it is a little boring but very solid and a bike to trust. Ride careful!

hello tommen, lucky i got a fresh tengai. we opened up the engine and almost every part on it is fresh.
highways here are ok, some have potholes... we dont have to look for dirt roads here cause we have gravel/dirt roads going to some parts of the mountain, basically the Philippines has a rolling topography.
thanks for the advise on the transalp, probably ill kep the tengai for some time and just look for a replacement soon. i also have the klr650c version.
