They were wondering how much an electric start weighed, so I estimated it.

Starter motor: 1936gr/4.26lb
Reduction gear set: 600gr/1.32lb
Ring gear: 817gr/1.8lb
Sprag clutch: 644gr/1.42lb

I told them "About 9 pounds. Why ya aksin'?"

And they said, "Look over at what's on that shelf."

Oh, shit.

You don't hang out in your shed enough, Dave.

The voices will talk you into all kinds of things.

With all this "voices in the shed" talk, I started thinking of some old Kim Darby Movie of the Week where these little troll like monsters were in the basement.

Yeah, that why I can't go clean out my shed now. The spare parts trolls will get me.

That's true since, at the moment, I'm sadly "shed-less"......bikes and parts scattered in one garage, two storage units and three shipping containers.....all waiting for my shed (c/w attached house) to be completed! LOL

This is going to take me some time to do, mostly waiting for round tuits. There's much pondering to do, with parts spread all over the Shop of Horrors and me alternately staring at parts and then staring into the sun to try and figger crap out.

You'd think it was fairly straightforward; take the stator cover off, pop the rotor, pull the gears, the ring gear, the sprag clutch, remove the starter and cable, and pop it all together with the '84 600 covers.

But, noooo, it ain't like that.

The '84 600's pick-up coil is located opposite of where the 650 coil is, but not 180°. If it were 180° life could be simple. The ignition is wasted spark so there is a spark every 180°. Things could be made to work. The coil is also located on the inner cover, not the outer cover, but that's not a big deal. I think.

It may be necessary to use the '84 600 rotor to get the right timing. That's not so simple because the '84 600 had a single-phase alternator vs the 650 three-phase. Now, I'm halfway home because I have the Gen 1 ignition and alternator, but how well the three-phase stator will work with a single phase rotor can only be known by trying it out and seeing what it charges at. This assumes that the stator and rotor will fit one another. If they don't I could use an '84 600 stator and adapt it for use on a three-phase regulator. That would probably work if the magic smoke didn't come out of the regulator. Of course, I don't have an '84 600 stator laying about...

Then there is the timing plate on the KLR600 rotor. It is two lumps of metal spot welded onto the rotor, so it is an interrupted thing. Whether that would even work with the Gen 1 ignition is an unknown (the '84 CDI was a one-year thing and I don't have one).

If it is all horrible and depressing I can simply forgo the '84 covers and stick with the covers I have now and make a plug for the starter hole.

But where is the fun in that?

I'm thinking about deleting the electric start and installing the engine covers from an '84 KLR600. That was the kick-start only model year.

Totally waiting for the outcome Tom. Your voices are related to my voices I think. And then there's the wife's voice.
Well you all know the rest! Good luck!

With Squidly as my witness, I say that the tin foil only works for the control messages that are beamed at us by the NSA and from Alpha Centauri.
