I know this question has to have been beaten to death more times than Hillary has lied to the public but I'm facing a decision that I'd appreciate some input as I'm VERY new to the motorcycle world. I bout a 09 klr 650 with 24k miles on it probably bout a month ago from the dealer and I noticed the rear tire tread is getting a little low on the tread line. Therefore I'm looking to buy a backup tire for when I'll need to change it. I ride mostly on roads but a decent amount on gravel and dirt roads as well. nothing extreme. I'm trying to decide between the Heidenau K60 or the Mefo Explorer. Lets hear some of your thoughts on these from those that have them. I'd like whichever is higher mileage since I ride my bike mostly to avoid driving the jeep that gets 11mpg (Damn suspension lift and larger tires). Lets hear your thoughts.

Mitas tires

Mitas E-07 is another tire I was looking into as well
I put a set on my 2011 KLR. Wearing good, and handle good on road, and gravel. So far I'm happy with them.
Disclamer: I don't ride hard. I probably don't push them like some do.

I had a set of Mefo Explorers and got almost 8,000 miles on them. The are great 50/50 tires and was very pleased with their traction in all conditions, year round.

But we still haven't heard from Heidenau owners,yet.

Who sells the Mefo and Heidenau tires in the USA?

I ordered my Mefo's from Twisted Throttle. In the Kansas City area there are two dealers who sell them as well. TT had the best price delivered. I mounted them myself...of course.

Shinko 705 here, great tires and super affordable.

ride well in all speeds, i ride mainly offroad. but the tire in my opion is like 70/30

handles great on sand and rocks. i havent' tried it on rocks yet.

runs well on roads, and it's not noisy. best of all, the set was $110.

Mefo is a good all around tire. Heidaneau is also good but I have heard the smaller versions do not hold up as well as the larger bike version. Two of my riding buddies use them exclusively on their KTM 1290 and 1190. Gregg just got 12K on his rear, he rides hard on tar and dirt, Rick got 11K on his 1290 and also rides fairly hard. I think the difference between the two is the 1290 has more hp and Rick taps into that. Good all around 50/50 tire.

The shinko is a good tire if you stay on tar. I have had them and at this point won't touch them ever again. They do handle well on just tar but are sketchy on anything else. If you hit mud with them your chances of going down are very high. One trip I hit mud with the shinkos on my wee strom and went down 7 times. On the wee I found them very unstable in sand, and especially and hint of wet dirt or mud.

I ride with knobbies, tkc 80, on the klr since I do mostly dirt and I like the grip. For the money I would go with mefo or heidaneau. They both are in the $150 range so kinda expensive but like I said both great tires. Good on road and off.

i disagree with the shinkos, they run well on rocky/muddy but i only tried them in muddy terrain on a klx250 which is much lighter.

i have them on my klr and they are really good offroad, specially on sand. but YOU MUST LOWER YOUR TIRE PRESSURE, TO LIKE 20 REAR, 16 FRONT.
if you keep the pressure up, any tire will slice thru sand and u will drop it.


heidenau, my friend has the scout k60 and he hates them on sand, even with low tire pressure, he still does not have good traction, he is now using metzeller karoo3 that he swears by.
