I just purchased a new '09 KLR and was wondering if anyone has lowered their suspension. For me it's just a bit too tall. If you lower the rear shouldn't you lower the front also? Does Kawasaki sell lowering kits? Thanks for any help.

Give it some time and the suspension will settle a bit. Also, this may sound like common sense, but make sure you are sitting on the very front dipped part of the seat. It's modeled after a dirt bike and your supposed to be right up near the tank. When I bought mine I started out riding a bit back on the seat and it's definitely higher the further back you sit.

Live with the bike for a bit. I thought about lowering my 09 when I first got it, and now I have no desire to, as I like the way it sits. Also, more ground clearance helps off road, to state the obvious...

If you can't live with it after trying the stock height for a while, you can purchase lowering links on many sites.. They're cheap, but you'll have to do some work on the bike to get them on.. (not sure if you're mechanically inclined) They'll lower the back, and then just raise your forks in your clamps.

I thought the same. Having ridden it for just a couple of days the height now seems to be a good fit. A lot of bikes are to short for me. Nice having one that isn't.

I have had my KLR for just under 2 years. I have decided to take the plunge and get the lowering kit. The bike is just about an inch too high, most of the time it is no problem, but on those occaisions when you have to back it out of an area that may have a slight incline, well, it can be a pain. I ordered the 1.5 inch lowering links off ebay, we'll see how good they are. As far as the front goes, no lowering kit needed, just loosen the eight, I believe, bolts on the triple tree and lower the forks the same amount you lower the rear. I bought a White Bros kit for my Harley one time and did not use it, I just lowered the forks the same way, no problems, they have been that way since 2000, and over 14,000 miles.

The kit is a good idea if you can't sit flat footed, or very close to it when you are on the bike. In reality without good solid footing it can be a hazard, just not as much control as you should have when sitting. Some may disagree, but in the 30+ years I have ridden, I have learned the hard way (at times) that good footing is essential. And really the lowering links are a very inexpensive alternative to lowering the bike.

I actually think that the height of the bike is one of it's safer aspects. I can see over traffic, and if I can see them, they can see me. I am on the balls of my feet when I'm stopped, but have adapted and that's only an issue at lights, when I am stopped.

I have only had mine for a few days..yes it is high...but I like it..I can see over most cars comming up to a intersection and pretty much get a snapshot of what traffic is doing. Sometimes it's nice to see INTO cars:) For sure more visible. The KLR is not a very big or heavy bike so it can be easily managed on tip toes. My sons Husky is even taller, actually have to lean it some to touch and it works just fine in the woods. Just a matter of getting used to it. Every lowered bikeI have been around handled poorly.

Yeah, I'm inseam challenged as well. I'm on the balls of my feet at a stop, also. It is pretty intimidating at first but hang in there! You may learn to love it.....!

Just lowered mine today

bout 4 hours ago and right away I knew it was the right thing to do. I is now the perfect height, no more tip-toes. The bike feels as though I have complete control now, I dropped it 1.5" all around. Even wih the drop it is still atall bike you are not really going to lose much. Having ridden both ways, lower is the way to go if you are not close to flat-footed, much better feeling.

I know you'll see lots on the forum on this topic and others will say what I'm about to. I have a new 2009 with just 550 miles on it up to now. First bike ever and just learned to ride for the first time. I am on my toes if I put both feet down so I just slide over and flatfoot one side when I need to. I seriously thought about and researched the lowering options. I took the risk of leaving it stock until I got used to the handling. I have absolutely no regrets and love every minute of riding, even the stop and go in traffic. With good soles on the boots I have no fear of my foot slipping. If in time I get tired of stretching my feet down I'll opt for a Sargent or Corbin lower saddle but I don't think I will ever play with the riding dynamics of the KLR by changing the suspension in any way. Maybe I'll just put on 30lbs and keep the tank full to add weight!

Lower or not, remember that that flat footed feeling is only a factor when the bike is stopped. I've heard of people dropping a bike at a stop because they lost their footing (regardless of height) but ride height is not a factor in crashes.

I'm in the same boat. I want to pick up a 2009 KLR 650 from the dealer and I'm 5'6" - 240lbs. I'm a shorty compared to this bike. I sit flat footed on by sportbike (600cc ZX6) and my HD Fatboy. The height of this bike is intimidating to me, but a bike I definitely want. If I have the dealer lower the bike 1.5" inches with the lowering kit is there also an aftermarket seat that may provide additional clearance? I've never been a huge fan of stock seats and will ride 2 up on the KLR and want more comfort. Riding 2 up also will concern me if I can hit the ground flat footed.

Take a look at the seats at http://www.tpimotorcycleparts.com/ The have a dual platform seat that lowers the riders position.
The trouble with lowering links is it makes an already soft suspension too soft. The bike will bottom out easily when offroad. If you're under 200lbs, don't haul any extra stuff and don't do much offroading then the lowering links may work for you.
