I have a 09 and I am trying to get together a small assortment of tools to keep on my bike and was wondering if anyone may know of a kit or if anyone may have a list of all sizes needed and I can come up with something. Any help would be great

I made myself a pretty standard tool tube and then went down to the hardware store and got some things calle "view-tainers". They are clear tubes with rubbery caps - I got two six-inch-long ones and one four-inch-long one.

In the short one I put tube patching materials and some extra fuses.

I then laid out the stock tool kit to see what it would cover and figured that I needed to add a socket set, a couple of allen wrenches, and a multi-bit screwdriver.

I wound up needing two allen wrenches and about a third of the sockets from the 1/4" drive socket set. I found a compact multi-bit screw driver from the local hardware store that seems to work pretty well. There are a couple of other odds and ends, but all the stuff fits in the view-tainers. The view tainers and a couple of tire irons all fit in the tool tube.

That's the approach I took - I'd be happy to inventory it and take a couple of pictures if you like.

Tom,

Thanks for the info. If you would not care to send some pictures that would be great. I am just wanting to try to come up with tool kit that is functional and don't want to over pack. It's one of those classic cases of man I can't believe I forgot that or the opposite why did I bring all this crap. lol .Any help you could give would be great. Thanks in advance

One of the quickest things I learned wasn't in the kit that you will need is a socket that will fit the axle nut. Not much use in a tool kit if you can't get the tire off. Not something you immidiately think of.

Simplest way to find out what you need for tools is to take the time to change your own tires using what's on the bike. If you can't then add the tools you need. Then take off the seat and gas tank again using only the tools on the bike. Again add what you need. From then on every time you work on your bike try only using the tools you have on the bike and add what you need. Simple. :) The reason this works is because if you can't do the work in the garage you have no chance of getting it done on the road or trail and don't need those tools.

OK, chores are done. Here's my toolkit. Aside from an inflator, a can of TireFlate, and a tire patch kit (all to ward off evil Gods of Puncture), these are the extra tools I carry.

Fuses
Fuse puller
Screwdriver and bits
6, 8, 10, 12, and 10 deep 1/4 drive sockets
1/4 drive ratchet
6" inches of extensions
7/9, 10/11, and 12/14 combination wretches
Vise Grip
Extra hardware odds 'n ends
Crappy knife
Home-made tool for timing and crank bolt covers
5 and 3 mm hex keys
2 tire irons.

It all fits in the tool tube, inside the view-tainers.

Oh, and the 08+ tool kit has a wretch that will fit the axle nut.
