Just getting in to the top end. Bought on eBay with known top end noise. So, the motor turns round with no undue noises. As I crank past TDC it does pull itself down, valve springs? spark plug is out.
So with the cam cap, off all looks good, tension on the chain seems normal. However, when I look under
the cam cap I can some bright marks where the chain has obviously been bouncing up and touching the casting. I have learnt that post 96 models have a chain guide / guard at the top, mine does not as its an 89.
I think this could be the top end noise the previous owner was referring too??

What do you think? Comments welcome.
Cheers

zooltan,
There is supposed to be a 3 inch long, black rubber Chain slider attached to 2 little pins up inside of the "Valve Cover" between the cam sprockets. Part #12053-1107, about $15.00 USD. Fits '87-'95.

If your valve cover doesn't have the pins you need to purchase the guide for 1996-up, #12053-1353, about $28.00 USD and the short middle bolt #92150-1868, about $2.50 USD. I'm guessing your bike might have a 1996-up cylinder head installed (if it has the bolt hole for the short bolt).

Many thanks for this key info. Indeed my bike is an 89 with the two pins to mount the rubber piece. I have ordered it this morning from Kawasaki at £9 ($11), not bad. I will be interested to see how robust the fixing is considering I think my two pins may be a bit shorter as the chain has touched them (ends of pins are shiny) I may have to modify the fixing in some way.
Appreciate your help and I will post when fitted with outcome!
