Anyone have experience with either of these?

-is this set up too loud for city riding?

-does anyone know the difference between the two models (standard and stealth)

Exhaust: I would study whatelse needs to be done to add an aftermarket exhaust.

I was told when you put a slip on you don't need to change anything. Anyone know if this is true or not.
Duck this is your answer: Believe this...when you increase the flow of exhaust you create a more lean condition. The more lean condition is caused by increased air flow.

Duck this is my ongoing rant about the need of the KLR rider to change the muffler: If you believe the aftermarket slip-on muffler is not increasing air flow then I ask why is the $400 aftermarket slip-on muffler being installed? If you want noise and looks and you can afford it, go for it. If you want performance may I suggest the 685 kit. Costs the same and make HUGE improvements in powerband, lack of vibration, and the possibility of better gas mileage if you can avoid playing with the Happy Grip.

KLRCary, the designer and manufacturer of the 685 kit, was known to say the KLR650 engine does not need a freer flowing exhaust until it was a 705.

If you spend the money on the 685 and want to spend more spend it on head porting and valve size.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I am considering an aftermarket slip on exhaust for a couple of reasons, neither of which are performance oriented. First is that, due to the shape of the stock silencer, with the dog leg below the side plate, a lot of heat is generated and my wife complains it cooks her leg and foot. I was "hoping" a straighter slip on exhaust might not hang down so low and do this? I don't know...

Secondly (and a distant second), I can't deny how cool the aluminum exhaust would look on the bike. I am not into noise, I generally always keep stock exhaust on all my bikes, so if it would be much louder, then I am not interested. The bike is fast enough for me as is...If I want to go fast I have another steed for that.

Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree??

I had great (and free) results just by pulling the baffle. The muffler is huge and baffle removal increases flow a bit without being loud. Just a good bark when I yank the throttle. At regular cruise and in town riding, sounds the same as any lawnmower. LOL

As an afterthought, I added a White Bros E pipe to my DR650S
a few seasons back and hated it! It got louder and lost the bottom-end punch.
Thumpers make their best power down low and it sucked to lose that just for a
few ponies close to redline where the tach rarely if ever went.

Pretty much what Timmato said. The stocker flows fine until either major headwork
is done or displacement is added. Save the money.
I did, however go from the stock 142.5 main to a 150 for the increased airflow.
(Also opened the intake.)
Don't wanna lean out at 6000 rpms. Not good.

Yes, this is where Mike buys the kits. Mike worked closely with Cary when the 685 / 705 kits were being designed. Contact Mike and have hime tell you whether it would be beneficial for you to purchase the kit from Eagle Mfg & Eng. Someone has to bore the cylinder.

That's a lot of money for a muffler in these economic times. I got my entire FMF Q4 system with header, for a little less than that.

I figured the stocker flowed fine at normal RPM's but the weight is why I changed mine (also the Farkle factor). I didn't loose any bottom end that I could tell, but it sounds a bit nicer IMHO, but again I'm not into loud pipes that's why I went with the FMF Q (as in quiet)4. Heck on this bike losing ~ 15 pounds was worth it imho and again the "farkle" factor of that stainless header is WAY cool. Look around, I got my full FMF system for ~$250.

I think that makes perfect sence.... losing some weight up high helps a ton on controlling this big pig, especially when you got to pick it up off the ground!:64a:

Yes, I did rejet, but not necessarily for the FMF, I live a mile high altitude and put the leaner of the two main jet options in the carb. Runs much, much better now as it way to rich prior with the stock jetting.
