Riding home yesterday. On 101...four lane freeway. I was in the third lane in. Next to the fast lane. I always keep a good eye on everyone around me. Few cars in front of me. Few way back. And a gold Honda Civic in the slow lane about 15' behind me. I was getting ready to merge left into the fast lane. Checked the mirrors. Good. Checked blind spot with a head turn...good. CHECKED AGAIN right as I was starting my change (less than seconds between the two head checks). On the second head check I see the left edge of the bumper of the gold Honda about three feet behind me, and a woman looking down texting. I hit the throttle and pushed on the right grip hard. She looked up and screamed...we were now right next to each other.

She drifted FOUR lanes. If I had trusted my mirrors, or even settled for the first head check, I would be in bad shape or dead right now. And, honestly, I think if I didn't regularly go do parking lot practice, practice swerves, practice in general, I don't think I would have been able to react appropriately. There was NO time. Luckily it is ingrained now. But a moment of target fixation, or not knowing how to stop the handlebars from wanting to slap and I would have been down with a Honda on top of me.

Moral: Practice even more. Check blind spots like your life depends on it. It does. Muscle memory is a wonderful thing. Scared the crap out of the chick in the Honda (she was pretty...and pretty oblivious). I wasn't scared...just glad I was ready.

We're surrounded by idiots if you didn't already know this. Here's your official notice. Didn't you get the original memo?

Oh, I know. I've even been hit by one. But this was the worst I had ever seen. Man, I wish I had a picture of her face, though. I wonder if she had to change when she got home. She sure was scared. At least she looked like almost killing me would have been a negative in her book. ;)

And thanks, I'm glad I'm OK too! And my bike...I'm just starting to get it how I like it. ;)

I got rear ended by a woman. In my infinite wisdom, I asked her why she hit me. She said," Because I didn't stop in time." Then she got out of her car and pulled out a humongoloid channel 4 news camera to videotape the damage to my car. Her insurance paid me $1300 and I fixed it for $130. Woo hoo. Yay for me.

Lockjaw, glad things came out fine. As you have indicated there is NO substitute for practice. There are many many idiots out there and that is why we have to keep on our toes.

I've been run off the road, a few times here in the fine state of Arkansas, and had to follow a fine gentleman "dancing" with his car while on the cell phone. A lady not to far from here was run over by another fine lady, when the first lady tried to stop her because of an accident around a blind corner. The lady driving was talking on her cell and didn't see her, she only had a clear view for a little over a mile, means she saw nothing in front of her for over an minute, if she was doing the 55mph. My point, they are trying to sue gun manufactures for the use of their product by idiots or sciopaths, can we sue Samsung or Toshiba or Phillips using the same reasoning.

Do you love it when the pull out in front of you and stop after they have blocked your lane? Instead of trying to get out of your way, just sit there in their car and stare at you as you are about to hit them broadside. The wife and I were in Downers Grove, Illinois a bunch of years ago and an elderly lady, about my age now, pulled out in front of me and did this and looked at me with the expression you wouldn't dare hit my Rolls Royce with your motorcycle. When I stopped a couple of feet from her door, the look she gave me would have frozen lake Michigan over.
