Hi guys,

I cleaned the carb, idle jet, and main jet, and now the bike doesn't sputter out and die at idle! (it would die at idle before I cleaned carb, unless I pulled hard on throttle and held it there). Now, it holds steady at idle at 2k RPM!

It runs at like 2k RPM, but when I turn the throttle a hair, it drops big time to under 1k RPM!!

When I keep turning the throttle to about 1/4 turn or more, the RPMS skyrocket to 4k RPM!

As I turn the throttle, RPMS do this (notice how the RPMs dip):

No throttle: 2k RPM
One hair throttle (1/8 turn): under 1k RPM
1/4 throttle: 4k RPM

Why is my RPM dipping, then skyrocketing?

Feels almost like a jet problem. Previous owner, I found out, installed dyno jets, 2 of which I cleaned last night (idle/pilot jet and main jet). There are a couple other little jets still in a package/box, but I don't know if I am supposed to install them or not. When I cleaned the carb, tho, I sprayed the heck out of any non-rubber hole in the carb, in hopes of clearing any goo, then spraying it hard with compressed air in a can.

All advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

S. Tassan

P.S. I used some Lucas cleaner in gas tank. I will try running it for an hour or so after work today.

Let us know how the Lucas stuff works out - it may cure whatever is left to ail the carburetor.

If it doesn't and there are no new or different symptoms, you might want to pull the slide and make sure it's not sticking or there is a tear in the diaphragm. But, before you do that, consider this...

If the previous owner had installed a pilot jet, then the idle may be set too lean. Gently seat the idle circuit screw, counting how many half turns it takes to seat it, just so you know where it was before you start fiddling with it. Back it out again, a half turn further than it was. If it gets better, try another half turn. At some point it should stumble when you carck the throttle, indicating you should go back in a half turn. Turning the screw out makes the idle circuit richer.

With all this jetting that was done, were there any corresponding intake and exhaust mods that would have warranted rejetting?

Many many thanks!

Hi Tom!

I totally cleaned the slide and did the adjustment you suggested on the idle pilot jet. Wow, what a difference! I ran all around orange county and let the Lucas work its magic, and the bike is running great.

Many thanks to you, sir, what a relief that was to get it running smoothly.

Glad to hear it's all good now. Congrats!

The OC, huh? Maybe we'll run into one another one of these days. I usually am headed more northerly, but do run down to Sandy Eggo once in a while.

The OC

Ya man. I saw your location on your heading, I need to edit my profile. I've been planning to go north too and may do that soon. Let me know in advance if you go through the OC.
