It's a new year, so we start a new thread. Who is doing something to their KLR today?

That one looks too good for wallowing in the mud
I hope to keep the shiny (less muddy) side up!

Removed the snorkel and installed a freshly oiled UNI air filter.

@MN Willie @Gen3piglet some new car manufacturers allow filter changes every other oil change. Subaru is one, FWIW.

From a logical argument, if you go 6000 miles and just add oil to top off, would you think the filter would stop up? I’m assuming (and might make an a$$ of myself🤣) that if filters clogged/exploded/etc after double the mileage, they would have lots of lawsuits for damaged engines.

I don’t always skip filter replacement, but if I want to change it in a hurry I will.

Would love to hear what some of the sages on here think. I know what @pdwestman says “….at your own risk “!

I’m on that plan , if the filter wasn’t available and only had 2 or 3 thousand miles on it. Fresh oil is cheap and at only 2.5 q why not.

Bought a cheap foam pad at Walmart for $6 to see if it helped my junk from going asleep within 15 miles.

It helped, but I still had discomfort and numbness.

Beautiful day for a ride and wanted to scope out some camping sites, but still snow in the woods.

Oil & Filters ARE CHEAP.... when you compare to Engine Parts, Labor, Down Time, Towing, Lost work.....

Big Rigs will SAMPLE OIL, Change FILTERS, ADD OIL and Wait for Sample results if everything else is "Normal"!

Most "Extended" Oil Changes you find these days (keep in mind it was not long ago it was every 3000mi for Cars) are there because of improvements in OIL Tech over the years. The Oil Filter Tech has not improved MUCH. Food for thought!!!

Sage.... I'm not! Some claim opinionated, they don't know what they are talking about! ;)

I gotta ask.... why are you guys NOT changing the Filter with the Oil EVERY time? To each their own, I'm just wondering.

Willie
Two reasons; I'm lazy and I'm cheap. Granted, oil filters are cheaper than a top-end rebuild, but I end up changing the oil about 3 - 4 times a year and after 93 K miles, I figure I can count on the oil filter lasting an extra month or so.

- After so many miles (and it's such a mess) I only change the oil filter every second or third oil change.
Do you stand your bike Vertical & remove the LH plastic caps to rotate the crankshaft to BDC to allow the oil filter cavity to drain the 6-8 ounces of old oil from the filter cavity?

Maybe that much residual old oil is why some people complain their new oil darkens so quickly? ;)
I'm running for cover. :)

No - I stand it up vertically and usually tip it back and forth a few times to drain as much old oil as I can, but I recognize the fact that I'm not clearing out all the old oil and I am not surprised when it gets very dark, very quickly. I'd never thought of rotating the crankshaft to drain the last dregs, but I may do that next time I forsake the oil filter change.

FWIW, the oil filter that I removed (around 9 K miles) looked good; no visible damage, no glitter, and still has the oil filter bypass tube (valve). :D

It will probably still happen, just to a lesser extent. :)
Transmission shafts & cam shafts are hollow, and filled with pressurized oil.

I would wonder how much oil is going through the filter AND how much Oil is going through the Bypass later in your Oil Filter's life. As Filters Plug, they CAN go into "Bypass" to continue feeding Oil to the engine. The Oil going through the "Bypass" is "Dirty" Oil.

I get it, you have had good luck with your methods. I think you COULD be MUCH "luckier" with more frequent Filter changes IF the Filter is going into "Bypass".

A paper media oil filter would need to look worse than many properly oiled, yet dusty foam air filters before the oil filter by-pass valve allowed anything other that the first few seconds of Cold oil thru it, IMO.

Read here, OIL Pressure, How much Ya got?

Better yet, read the entire thread. :)

I'm reading the VERY COOL Post! I'm going to find time to sit down and read from end to end. Thank you!

From what I've read thus far, the Filter Bypass is JUST for Cold Start-up Protection of the Oil Filter to EQUALIZE Pressure to prevent CRUSHING. Am I Tracking correctly? Can it prevent "Crushing" if the Filter PLUGS while in operation?

Willie
JD Jetting ride report as follows. I like it. You know those little rides you might go on just after dinner or just before?
You just sort of sneak off and go fill up , or ride down by the river or something ,you get the idea. Old married guys know
what I'm talking about. So you are out there on you little route, and oh crap I'm going a a lot faster than normal and
I'm not even trying to!! The difference is modest but unmistakable, and faster to start, I like this thing.

I change mine at the same time. BTW, I've never seen enough detritus in the filter that would really warrant it...

That sounds like fun! What trails are you riding there? I’m in Nashville and always looking for areas in the state to explore.
