Hey guys, new to the forum. Looking to pick up a klr this summer, probably a 1st gen. As I scroll through online sites like craigslist, etc..., the asking price varies a lot on these bikes. What I'd like to know, is what do you have, and what did you pick it up for? I feel like some of the guys have an emotional attachment to their bike, and ask a little more than what she's worth. Like 2002, with 20k miles, good condition, all stock, and asking price is $2500 firm. Isn't that a little much for a 13 yr old bike, or am I underestimating the value of these bikes?

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Price is an impossible thing to nail down with bikes. It all depends on location and supply and demand. I live in a rural area with no big cities nearby, so a beater gen 1 in barely running condition will still fetch $1500 CDN easily. One in good condition here could easily sell for $2500 to $3000.

My best advice would be to just watch the classifieds for a while to get an idea of your local market for the KLR's. You might find out that bike is right in line with local pricing, or it could indeed be overpriced.

Gotcha. It's not an incredibly common bike where I live, in fact I've only seen a few on the road. That's probably the reason there are only a handful for sale within 100miles, and why I'll have to pay top dollar for one. I'd rather base my opinion on what people are finding and selling them for, than what the nada and blue books suggest. Obviously location makes a big difference with the value of these bikes. I just have to have one! Thanks for your input.

I agree, depends where you are...

They are very, VERY cheap in the UK for example.

Seems to be a very niche market over here?

Great if you want to buy one, but not if you want to sell here!

But then (luckily) I wont be selling mine.

Happy hunting :)
