Anyone out there have issues with high winds buffetting them at high speeds, 65-80 MPH? Any recommendations on dealing with this. I am currenty on vacation in the black hills and find it an issue with crosswinds.

I just got back from there and had similar issues. I just leaned the bike into them and motored on. Are you saying winds are at 80 mph or are you driving at that speed? If so slow down. We never had any 80 mph winds but top of Beartooth was windy for sure.

I find that relaxing a bit helps in crosswinds. That sounds illogical, however, I find that loosening up a bit on the death grip and focus on "herding" the bike helps. It won't keep it from being blown around, but once I get it in my head the bike isn't going to go tumbling like a tumble weed and focus on just keeping it on the black stuff, it goes better. Similar to learning to ride on gravel and dirt. Many at first tend to "tighten up", hoping to gain some control, and in reality, are hindering operation. I have far more miles on heavier motorcycles, that are not prone to "giving to the wind", which makes it a little unnerving sometimes. Especially when trying to hang with larger, heavier motorcycles out on the road. I have ridden in a wind storm that was so bad I stopped and removed the front fender, as I was certain the front end was being lifted off the asphalt on occasion.

Riding with other type bikes presents problems sometimes, as those bikes may handle the wind better than the tall, top heavy, high fendered KLR 650. On the flip side, you can see and travel three times more of the Black Hills on a KLR than the street bikes can.

My last suggestion would be to slow down, unless you are evading a jealous husband. There are few places I need to get to anymore that I can't get to at 50 MPH. While I agree 80 MPH would be nicer, I prefer to get there in one piece, and have some kind of enjoyable ride behind me, rather than a hard core fight against the wind. Like a sailboat, sometimes we have to adjust to the wind. If that does not fit in your plans, you may have chosen the wrong vessel.

Just to add one thing to vatrader's excellent response. If you lock your arms the wind pushes your arms and that pushes the bars and you are making steering inputs you don't want. It is windy as hell most of the time around the bay. Just relax, your arms especially. Squeeze the tank with your knees. Slow down. Have faith. Your bike wants to keep going forward. Let it wander a little if neccesary, but you really don't need to worry as much as your brain is telling you to.

Thanks man. One thing I know a LOT about is riding in extreme wind. The GG Bridge is a good training course. :)

er.... umm...am i kinda missin something here (yeah probably!), ITS A TRAIL BIKE!!!!! they kinda get a bit windy yeah.You could try and farkle it into a Gold Wing,probably handle the sand better too!

Thanks vatrader and lockjaw! This helped me!! I am reading a few riding books and between some things said in them and what you two just said I now understand I wont fall over. The joke around here is that the annual wind festival starts jan 1st and ends dec 31st every year! It totally feels like it especially in 50mph gusts coming from the side that even pushes cars into your lane. I wasn't even to the pass where it is the worst. I hate most when everyone speeds WAY up just to make the pass as fast as they can to get out of the wind and I am trying to slow down and not blow over. Still freaky but now I think I can go out and practice when Im healed up to gain more confidence.

Actually, you're onto something there.. Since adding my aluminum panniers I've noticed my KLR to be more stable in wind.. It's not a Wing, but I'm working on it!!:D

Oh the joys of farkiling to come. I am so stoked I went the KLR rout! Although my body hates me for it...

Keep farkling..

I've farkled mine out for comfortable adventure touring.. It's amazing what a quality seat does for you..
That is my dream! As a kid I dreamed of going to Alaska and after having been there a few times now my dream is to ride all the way there and around. That is what got me here and maybe some day I will live it.

But for now I need to learn how to ride. LOL I am contemplating taking a dirt biking class to get more confidence on dirt. Seeing as my first time on it I ended up with other firsts.

If you're serious, read through Brian Dow's ramblings.. He used to post here a fair amount as KLRless.. I drank a few beers with Brian when he was a Grad Student at Michigan U in Houghton, MI.. He's since bought a KLR and then moved to Alaska.. Not sure if he still has the KLR, but I know he ended up buying a BMW GS oilhead while up there..

Great guy, and he's learning more about the area every day

hey "paper" that is one mean farkled machine! and you're right,it nearly is a "goldie!!! wots that in front of the sump guard? and while i'm here appologies to "lockjaw" re wind buffeting,merely making comments that the 08 klr is

It's actually a section of PVC pipe that I use as a tool tube. My regular tools, plus a few extra needed items are tucked away in there.. Glued cap on one end, threaded cap on the other.
Since I covered my tool cubbie with the top box, I needed a location for tools.. Cheap modification I've seen on several KLRs.. :)

I hate the wind, especially with the ginormous windshield I have on there.

Will have to try the relaxing deal. I really do tense up when the wind starts up.
