Hello All,
It is time to post another thread on my projects on my KLR. I am thumbing through the past posts on Wolo Air Horn or Seibel Air Horns and there is what I found.
First - There are not a lot of current submissions. The older ones were pretty entertaining. I was riding to work this week and another car on highway just pulled into my lane. Not surprising that some people still play their radio loud and never see motorcyclists.
Second - I tried to warn them I was already in the lane, but the "beep-beep" from my stock horn was not too intimidating at 70 mph. I was laughing when I read an old thread where it was described as a "wet duck fart". I chuckled again when I type it. Seriously, I would like to change out the horn so I can make my presence known.
Third - And most importantly - I am looking for ideas about mounting. The where and how and suggestions on what to use.

I know I have to install a relay for the power, and a fused power block. I will document all I have found in the following threads.

So, please chime in here. Tell me how you installed yours. I saw two on YouTube, but still I want to hear from all of you.

The location that Sardog uses, in front of the coolant reservoir, is the preferred spot. It's close to the original horn location, so there is easy access to the stock connectors (to trigger your relay) and it has plenty of room.

While you're in there and messing about with the stock horn connectors, it would be a good idea to do Norm's mod to take switched power of the hot side of the horn. You never know when you might need it.

I like it.
I was looking to the location.
Could use the same quality suggestion on the fuse block location.
Got ideas there?

TwistedThrottle make this Stebel Horn Mount for the Gen2 bikes. It seems a bit puny, but I guess it works.

On the fuse block recommendation - I don't have a good spot to recommend because there isn't one. The best thing would be a FuzeBlock, Centech, or Eastern Beaver PC-8 under the seat, but there isn't enough room.

This is where I put mine, as it was the best spot I could find after having tried up under the front cowling, which I found to be a most inconvenient and miserable spot.

Since that time, Jim has come up with what looks to be a great solution for the KLR. He calls it the Three Circuit Solution. It looks to me to be ideal for sticking under the seat.

Don't be put off by the fact that he's in Japan - he ships quickly.

Larry31, I so agree with Tom. That was the best I have seen yet. I will manufacture a mounting piece next weekend. Thanks for sharing your expertise and ideas.

I have a problem with my IMS tank - it won't allow for the standard mounting of a Stebel because it simply takes up too much room. I have also added some braces for it that get in the way.

I think larry31's solution, with some modification, may work for me. I have to try it the next time the tank is off!

With the addition of MOTECH crash bars and the Thermo-Bob2 I have had the bike down to the backbone so much that it seems like every other weekend the tank is off the bike. I would like to know what changes you are planning, too.
I don't have the Stebel, but I have the Wolo that Larry pictured. That is what sold me on his modification.

The WOLO and the Stebel are of the same design and identical dimensionally.

On your Gen 2 the side plastics are concave and there is a fair amount of room inside them.

The IMS tank uses that room completely. What I think I have to do is take larry31's concept, but move the mounting point toward the bike's center line somewhat. Even at that, I may have to rotate the horn 90°.

I'll dig out my horn and post some pictures up.

Here's the area in question. As you can see, there is no room to the left as there would be with the stock tank.


If mounted flat it will interfere with the speedometer cable and the fender:



The thing is very nearly square, so orientation doesn't much matter as far as fit goes. Horn pointed down for drainage is good, though.

But it should be OK to mount sideways:

Forgive me for using your thread to think!

I will probably build a bracket like this one:


This will give me three mounting points that are connected to the frame.

The stiffening strut for the tank is one I designed to cure the vibration of the tank's lower wing, yet bend on impact. I will have to re-design it to fit, as that mounting point is recessed and needs a stand-off to be in the same plane as the other two mounting points.
