Charleston to Chicago

Hey all. I'm planning a trip from my place down here in charleston south Carolina and riding my bike up to Chicago. Trip was planned awhile ago, a time when I did not own my Klr, so it was a no brainer to fly... But times change and I do own a Klr now so I'm gonna ride. Just wondering if anyone knows any good places to make a pit stop and stretch, must see scenery, photo ops, maybe a place to camp. I'll be leaving in mid June so weather should be in my favor. Maybe some rain but noting good gear won't fix. But just figured I'd throw it out there, gets some advise on it. I've googled it but would prefer some knowledgeable people's advice. It's my first majior trip so probably going to be needing more stops than some, but I'll make it eventually. Any advice you have before Taking such a trip is much appreciated. Any must read threads that maybe I've missed? Thanks in advance.

I'd jump in, but you're riding an area that I avoid on the bike.. I'm a touch over an hour NW of Chicago, and I go NW from here, rather than SE.. Maybe some of the IN, OH, and KY guys can help?

Well, what is your planned route? Hard to offer advice without a route unless you are wanting advice on that too.

No real planned route. I figure it will revolve around stuff to see along the way. Ill end up leaving sc by I-26 westbound. That takes me out of sc and into north Carolina. I know in north Carolina has some mountains and nice scenery so that should be nice. But after that I'm really open to whatever. Gps is saying 26 to I-40 west. Take that to Knoxville Tennessee. Get on I-64 west into Lexington Kentucky. Over to Louisville, hopping on I-65 north. Taking that up through Indianapolis Indiana, to Gary Indiana. Getting on I-94 west into Chicago. Anyone have anything interesting they know along that route?

Daniel Boone NF/Cave Run Lake area in KY is really nice. It's an hour at the most east of Lexington, right off of 64. Cool little BBQ place there called the Pig Out BBQ, on 801. It's between 64 and Cave Run Lake. It's just south of where HWY 60 crosses 801, on the left hand side. How would a boy from northern Indiana know how to give directions to a BBQ place in Morehead, KY? It's good food. Also if you overnight there, the Comfort Inn at 64 and 801 is a decent place.

Knoxville to Lexington on 75 is a nice ride, but I would stay on 75 all the way to Cincy, then hit the 275 bypass, then take 74 to Indy. It's a quicker than going all the way to Louisville and then north.

Depending on how tight your schedule is, you may want to consider staying on 64 through Louisville all the way to 231, and then take the 2 lane north. I've never ridden this route south of the Crane Naval Depot, but north of there it is a nice ride all the way north. When it gets up to West Lafayette, it changes to 421, however, and flat farmland from there to the state line.
