Hey Savage, Found An Iron Bridge

Inspired by the photos of Kansas iron bridges recently posted by Savage, I decided to set out today to find one. I was wrong: they're not all gone around here. The last iron across a larger river around here got wiped out by debris from a flood a couple of years ago, but there's still at least one of these small ones left.

The old Lincoln schoolhouse. Believe it or not, they used these one-room schools around here up until the early 1960's. No, I did not attend one.

One of my favorite roads around here. It's about the last remaining example of "hedgerows," where settlers planted hedge trees and interwove them to form natural fences. The "hedge," or Osage Orange tree wood was highly prized by Native Americans for making bows and was reputed to be the finest bow-making wood in the country.

This sign is a prime example of "Stating The Obvious." I was going to try it on the KLR, but haven't gotten around to doing the "Tee Mod" yet.

That looks like a fun ride, too.

That looks like an awesome place to ride! I like riding in tight shaded areas like that, but it sucks in this humidity. NO AIR whatsoever. What road or town were you close to?

Thanks for the inspiration. I was bound and determined to find an old iron bridge remaining around here somewhere. Although I usually just wander aimlessly, sometimes it's nice to have a goal, too. It took me a couple of hours to find this one: I'd forgotten all about it.

All these roads are around my hometown of Oregon, MO which is about 30 miles NW of St. Joseph. I've been traveling them since I was old enough to drive so know them pretty well.

Only by me and the local drunk teenagers out having a good time at night. Most other people stay away from it.
