Pics Of Today's Ride...And A Cautionary Tale

Got out early for my ritual Monday ride. It's too hot out to do anything else, so thought I'd post up in front of the computer here and share some photos. I stayed on the pavement today and did about 150 miles. Wasn't too hot as long as I stayed moving. I just kind of rode around aimlessly and stopped and took pictures of whatever caught my eye.

John Deere's answer to the KLR650. Reportedly better in the dirt with lots of low-end torque, but not as nice on the highway.

You know you're in a small town when you see something like this...

Chester The Giant Chicken

Local "Wind Farm." This one has about 30 turbines. Another one they're constructing just North of here will boast about 300 of them. The first time you see them, they're kind of cool: after that, as far as I'm concerned, they're just an eyesore.

[IMG][/IMG]

The things are pretty big. I'd guess they're around 300 feet tall. Even though it looks close in this photo, the KLR is probably a good 100 yards from the base of this turbine. It would be a mere speck if actually parked at the base of the thing.

They have one of the blades on display. I don't know how long it is, but am guessing around 120 feet? It may be longer than that. I stood next to the "base" of the blade where it bolts on and that circle is a good six feet in diameter, so you can kind of get an idea of how long the thing is.

The KLR isn't parked too far from the other end of the blade, if you can see the KLR. It's waaaay down there. Gives some idea of the length of the blade.

Oh yeah, the cautionary tale. I have a windshield and wear glasses, so thought I would be okay to leave the shield up on my helmet (an AFX-39) for awhile since it was so hot. I was running about 70 when a turtledove exploded up off the right shoulder and hit me directly in my right eye. It could have hit the top of my helmet and glanced off or it could have hit the chin guard, but it vectored right through both and into my face.

It happened so fast, I didn't have time to do anything. I vaguely recall seeing the bird flapping up off the shoulder and then it felt like a jab from Oscar De La Hoya in my eye, which is now starting to turn black from the bird shoving my glasses back into it.

From now on I'll have that shield down no matter how hot it is when I'm at highway speed. It scared the shit out of me and hurt like hell, but it could have been worse. I've been hit by flying birds in the chest and arm before, but never in the face with a helmet on.

There's a local guy that sells firewood (unattended) for $5 a bundle and he uses a wooden box for the money deposit. He's been doing it for years and I'm sure he gets ripped off at times but he keeps doing it.

I read somewhere that there is a restaurant where you pay on the honor system and they do well. Studies have been done that you usually come out ahead if you let people do the right thing. For instance, I'd drop a few extra bucks in that box.

Course, in the ghetto, where I have also lived, that shit is getting jacked with a quickness. But I bet you'd be surprised how many places it would work.

I read that one also. It kinda went like....pay what you feel your meal was worth.
