i never shared this one with the klr crowd...sheetiron 300.

i may have been banned or pissed or both at the time. ops:

here it is:

left early friday morning to beat the rain. setting up camp in the rain sucks.

rode the levy road from west sacramento up to woodland and took hwy 16 along cache creek and up through bear valley making my way to stonyford.

met up with bicycle phil(who cheated and had his bike on a trailer ) and steve. they had camp staked out when i got there. i was trying to swap out the 16tooth cs sprocket for a 14tooth. absolutely couldn't break the nut loose.

the rest of the crew was coming in later,so we went out for a burger and some riding. when we got back a whole bunch more riders had shown up. i was lucky enough to camp and ride with the san fransisco motorcycle club(been around since 1904 as i understand it).

we enjoyed a nice monsoon friday night and woke up to no rain saturday morning. the club designated phil as the bike warmer upper for the morning. he was drooling over a plated ktm dirt bike. here he is taking out a dr.

i'm proof reading to make sure i didn't swear in any of this...i don't usually bother cussing when i type,it takes too much effort.

more:

got a little fog in the lense. still some good pics though.

LET'S RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there were 2 easy splits for saturday. having never been to the event i chose the harder of the 2 splits, turned out to be pretty basic aside from the water crossing. it was a great ride with great folks.

an easy stream..plenty deep.

i've still got a day and a half to go on this report...

here's some more:

this was more like a fishing hole than a trail crossing.

i tried to stay to the downstream side, but the deep water pulled me over.i dabbed a right foot, kept the power on,dabbed a left foot, gave it more throttle, thumped myself on the head in my mind, got up on the pegs and hammered thru. i was the first thru in my group,no pics of me. a few riders wanted to stop and look for a minute which usually spells disaster for me,so i weaved around a couple riders and dove in.

come awn,phil!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the first swim team member. it didn't hyrdo lock. i got clays bike started after he pushed it ashore. pinned the throttle and cranked it up.

deepest part of the crossing, probably to the bottom of the tank if it stayed on the wheels. this one was a little harder to get running,he ended up laying it on it's side and cranking it. fired right up that way,the exhaust had filled up with water. poor guy flopped it on the little hill climb up from the stream.

more in a bit.

casey was already in so he helped out some of the less experienced. he went in face first right here and almost caught the rear tire with his visor...which he would lose in another crash later during the day.

neoprenes.. .

we lost phil somewhere on saturday. sorry buddy. he waved us by and we figured he was going to putt in the back for awhile. we got to the store near lake pilsbury and he was nowhere to be seen. it wasn't safe to go back and look for him,we just had to hope for the best and the sweepers to pick him up and see him when we saw him. he had a hard time navigating because his roll shart holder wouldn't hold all the tape. he said he tried to stay with some other guys after some locals got him pointed the right direction, but the other riders were too fast for him to keep up with. everything worked out okay in the end. we pulled into the motel at the exact same time.

no pics of the casey crash,he said he high sided the thing at about 50 and tossed himself down a bank and into some bushes. this was on pavement so the poor ktm dug in pretty good and stayed on the road.

we left the course and took the casey cut off to willitts and a tavern to wet our whistles. then we carved some sweet twisties on hwy 20 over to fort bragg.

a bunch of the other club members rode their own version of the ride up from the city...the streetiron 300. some ducati's,a buell,a cruiser,a bimmer..cool stuff.

day 2 later.

sunday morning on the way to breakfast/gas/gear drop-off i found my mural pic for the trip.

phil and I rode the morning hard section. the road was dry and not difficult at all. if it had been raining it could have taken a long time and been pure hell.

then there was some nice twisty pavement for 15 or 20 miles or so. then came the gas stop that was 90 miles from the next stop. the line was at least 1/2 a mile long. the club that puts the event on controls this stop. they only allow one pump to be used and the other pumps kept open for the locals. very orderly and the oakland club dude was wearing a big old money belt and cranking bikes thru as fast as possible.

at this point we had hooked up with john(an oakland mc member) on his klr,and martin on his drz. we were going to have to leave them at the gas stop. phil and i had plenty of gas to make the end and didn't want to wait for them to fuel up. so i bet martin a dollar he could make it without fueling up. i lost a dollar when he sputtered completely dry at 117 miles. so we drained some fuel out of phils bike and got him closer, then he ran out again and took some out of mine. johns klr made it in with one tip over to the left to get the rest of the gas. almost at camp i saw martin hanging onto the side of a pickup getting towed in.

more later...

not a whole bunch of pics left. this was a riding event, not a picture taking tour.

we saw some of this as we climbed up to the high country.

did this a few times:

we were really there.

and at the end we got kewl little buttons they made up for us. free hot dogs too.

packed up and rode 120 miles in a deluge...in my mx helmet...ouch.
