doing a winter Iron butt 1000 Jan 2nd

To send off a Army buddy to Iraq end of the month we are doing a epic winter journey on our 2011 and 2012 KLR's.

All month we had been servicing our bikes and testing out our gear for the cold weather .

bikes are about packed up and ready to go .. im stoked we will be ending the 1000 mile part of journey in vegas to warm up and a nap .

With the recent storms, ive been testing with multipile day trips in 10*-20 days .. testing wich layers i liked best for long hauls ..

Found it didnt take much for my body to stay warm at 10* other than wearing my old army silks and poly pro under my klim pants and teknic jacket ..

But my hands were going to be the deal breaker .. so i spent alot of time trying to find the best way to keep them warm .. Im diebetic and dont get much blood flow to hands and feet..

i spent alot on gloves and heated grips and even electric heated gloves .

For the gloves i tried the tourmaster 2.0 heated gloves at 170 bucks it aint cheap ..im using the bad fitting moose guards still..
but what i found was at 10* i still needed the heated grips to keep finger tips warm but with those on it also caused them to sweat and create cold spots long term .

i tried some of my expensive down gloves i used in -40 in Alaska but i felt like all thumbs with them on and still wasnt very warm after long term on the bike .

to my dismay the best combo i tested was the cheapest and last thing i tried ..

i used a pair of atv Kolpin mitts with my heated grips and lined work gloves and it was great ! i was riding at 18* for 200 miles yesterday and was very comfy with no sweat or cold spots .

the only real down side is not seeing your controls ,i hit my horn few times trying to select turn signal lol . took some getting used to slipping hands out of at speed but easily doable .

but these 20 buck mitts are fleece lined and slip right over my hand guards and im able to use only half power of the grip heaters as high was way too high .

Well we made it 700 miles but we ran out of time , we just flat froze . We overcame alot of little issues because of the cold but ran out of time and called it quits when we hit -9* .

My KLR had heated grips and mitts over the bars (life savers ) and heated gloves .
My partner in crime had just a good pair of gloves with glove heater pads shoved into both sides and stock hand guards .

At one point we were pulling over every 30 miles to readjust and warm up .

I was ok body wise but fingers even at -9 were getting cold . The major issue i had was the brain freeze from the air thru helmet onto my forehead lol serious icecream headache !!

we turned around and stopped in Las Vegas NM and found a cheap room ,stripped the bikes and went for a hot dinner ..

We decided we would try to find a place to park the bikes safe and warm ...so we parked both bikes in our motel room lol ..

It kept them from freezing and let us sleep tight .

woke up to a flat tire so we shoved some slime in there and added air but it didnt seem to stop the leak just slow it down we had to keep pulling over and add air about 60 miles or so .

wich was fine by us cause it let my buddy warm up .

Also found that only way i can run electric gloves with the heated grips was with bike running over 4500 rpms cause at idle it would die .

When we finally reached Trinadad it started to warm up to 20* and it felt like a heat wave we decided to have a big breakfast and relaxe . We sat laughing at ourselves and how crazy folks kept walking up saying we were .

One trucker walked up asked if we just came from down south and said he read the valley was -7* this morning lol ..

We saw loads of Antelope on the road side just bedded down . we drove through some snow and the off ramps were packed ice and snow .

Even though we didnt make the goal of 1000/24 it was a true adventure and im glad we tried great way to kick off the new year .. ill post some pics in a few ..

And it was a great way to send off a good friend to Iraq he will be missed .
