New Tunnels on Highway 1

A few weeks back, I seized my last chance to ride The Devil's Slide, a cliff-edge portion of Highway 1 in California just south of Pacifica. It's not a difficult stretch, but it provides a fairly epic vista far above the water.

It was my last chance, since Devil's slide was set to be closed to vehicle traffic forever, being a road in a place where a road has no natural business being. Perpetual landslides simply made it too expensive and inconvenient to maintain.

So a plan was hatched to bore a brace of tunnels through the hill behind the Slide. And those tunnels have just opened, so I decided to take the long way to my friend's house in Mountain View and check them out.

Now as you head south out of Pacifica, the old road can be seen to the right (it is already being torn out), and the new road goes across a gorge on a sweeping bridge, and then through the tunnels. (Stand up as you ride across the bridge to maximize your "flying" effect.)

The tunnel is one lane with a breakdown lane. A couple pairs of large fans on the ceiling provide air circulation. Additionally, there are several pedestrian cross-over points from one tunnel to the other. As of now, the walls are shiny white.

Exiting from the south on a slight downhill, the ocean looms large in view. You pop out right where that old abandoned military post is located.

And then because it's Saturday, you sit in stop-and-go traffic until you hit 92.

(The poor suckers on 92 westbound... that was backed up from 280 all the way to 1. Eastbound was clear enough.)

Or must I again watch, "Then Came Bronson" opening credits for views of the Pacific and a motorcycle?

I wish I had taken some, but there's no where to stop near the tunnels, and I was already late getting to the meetup. (We were putting a useful tank on my friend's DR-Z400SM.)

Gotta get me one of those fancy GoPros...
