colorado springs colorado to Wasilla AK and back 8875 miles

First things first my 2012 KLR was rock solid never touched it with wrench other than to replace my stock chain and sprockets and replace my bad Mefo explorers .

only thing that failed whole trip was my non klr grip heaters I installed in anchorage ..

Great job! I hope you have a ride report coming.

A fellow rider from the MTF just finished an Alaska ride: 9,900 miles in 16 days!

Well done.

I took my time and enjoyed this trip my first stop was Sturgis SD and then to Mt Rushmoore I really enjoyed hitting these places off season as I don't do crowds well and I was able to do the things I wanted and get out lol ..

I would stop at each border crossing this whole trip and take pic of my stead and sign ..started doing this after watching a you tube blog of by way of motorcycle ..

]

Before I left I had loaded all my gear for the trip to test the balance and see what my real mileage would be .So I went to Denver and back during rush hour figured my trip north would be my worst 47.5 mpg and down was my best of about 55.5 mpg so planned for the worse ..

Well I didn't plan for head winds ... My first day on the trip I was at the Wyoming/SD border 150 miles into the trip and I hit reserve ! at 180 I was flat out of fuel and me thinking of saving weight didn't top off my roto pax ! i was 6.5 miles from nearest gas station ..
But not to worry as i sat on side of the road looking at my gps thinking of my next move , i wasn't on side of road 5 minutes before this nice old lady in a caddy pulled over asked if she could help .... I told her i ran out of fuel 6.5 miles from nearest station and she says that's right and im headed to post office next door to it and offered to give me a ride. so i pulled my roto pax and went to top it off ..

So here i am in the middle of no where with a bum leg and this awesome lady gives me a ride and to find out she was from my home town of Wasilla AK she was a retired school teacher from Wasilla who came down to take care of her family farm ... Small world but i also took it as a good omen rest of the trip ... I wasn't on side of road 25 minutes and back on schedule !!!

First stop of the trip was Sturgis i was able to walk the board walk and see Sturgis HD store and have a wicked rack of ribs and ice cold beer before crashing for the night .
I found it very funny the mecca of Harley and it didn't sell a single bike here ..just t shirts and wallets ..

This place made killer ribs !!!

I get the wow your bike looks loaded down a lot this trip ..ill explain my bags real quick ..

my right side bag is my flammable liquids and bike parts like oil lubricants and cables levers and air pumps spare tubes etc .. the right bag was all my food for 30 days and water filters and cooking supplies , also on top of bag was my camp chair and picnic chair and big camp knife and my roto paz behind it all ,top yellow bag is my army 3 piece bag and my tarps tent and hammock .

rear box is my riding gear and change of undies in vacume sealed bags ...

my tank bag was my electronics stuff and meds (just got out of hospital few days before )

I slept in my hammock as much as i could ,only very few times did i not have any trees to tie off too .

Mt rushmoore was cool if you beat the crowds early in the morning before the tour busses and RV's... you park right up front and walk up ,take your photos walk into gift shop for the wife walk out and back on the road ...yep it how i roll lol
I woke up at 5 am feeling great and excited to ride and packed up for mt rushmore .

Next stop Cody Wyoming then following morning Yellowstone !

This is the road i took coming in to Cody and man was it fun ! like this up through the mtn pass and back down into Cody i loved every minute ! scenery was awesome ..

the weather warmed up nice and dried me up just as i hit Yellowstone park i cant describe this park, pictures don't do it justice ..

can you see the dinosaur fall into the hot pits ?

water was so hot it actually was boiling !!

Old faithful getting ready to pop !

More people came out for this then we have in my whole home town !!
This plce is so active it blew my mind it was like your walking in one big volcano so many little gysers and hot pockets and deep pools of boiling water ...

this is where i stopped for lunch and watched random gysers spew and puffs of colorful sulfur pockets come up making awesome colored steam come out of the ground watching a mtn be made right before me ..

Early next morning it was 21* and now you can see everything steaming like this whole hillside going out towards the north enterance of the park ...

next stop is Canada border on 191 in sak..Canada Im riding out on north enterance on Montana border and stop at a mcdonalds for a wi fi hot spot and breakfast so i can check in with the wife and family ..They are worried because i went from hospital to long ride so soon but i was feeling better every day ..

i ran into a a nice guy at mcd's who was going same direction i was into Canada and was from a border town of Cadillac Canada .. it was nice having a local ride along with the knowledge of road conditions and where to get good fuel .. Some of the roads i seen there rivals Destruction bay !!!
I did 850 miles this day and needed some down time so set up my hammock and don't remember closing my eyes ..

With the new oil fields everywhere Alberta has become a very modern state with all the population that follows it .. One good thing while here is no worries about fuel stops or hotels .. after almost 2 days of crazy cold heavy rain it was much needed ...

One thing i love about Canada is i always feel welcome here and people are some of the friendliest ive ever met in the world .. I truly love traveling thru every time ..

In Alberta i had a young man on a brand new Triumph tiger 800 and wanted to chat for a while about my trip and asked if he could ride along till next big town then once there asked if he could go one more lol just to be part of the trip ..This happened to me several times whole trip there and back ,i even jumped in on a group to D2D ...

I thought of the movie forest gump when the joggers would just join in and follow with no real destination ...lol

British Columbia and the Yukon has to be the most senic and remote areas in north America but its where i feel closest to being home back in Alaska ..

Once leaving Dawson Creek BC the scenery gets better and better and from now on don't pass a gas station once you hit 90-100 miles so many this year were either out of fuel or bad fuel or flat boarded up ..

i stopped at another mcd's to see another rider working on his Honda Goldwing and having issues with his phone to find his son who broke down with his Harley day before ..

WEll my phone is almost local being Alaskan i had service and he was able to get a hold of him and meet up and rest of trip north we kept leap frogging each other even stopped at Liard hot springs to soak for next stretch ..its hard work looking this good and ride as well as i do !! lol ..
the higher in elevation less trees to tie off too ..this was summit lake BC and it had some crazy storms i had at one point huge hail and lightning then crazy winds .. I tented it today and stayed under covers bit longer the next morning ...
