Afternoon Ride - Utah's West Desert

Not really a "trip" - it was just an afternoon ride with my son, but we had a great time!

Yesterday we decided to hit up some areas I've wanted to go - but won't go alone... They get too remote, and there isn't any cellular service out there, so if you get hurt or break down, it could be awhile before you're found. Now that my son (his Instagram name is "ravenlocke13" if you want to check out his pics) is living back at home for a bit, we can get out and ride together when our days off match up. So we decided to hit up an area just south of the Pony Express Route southwest of the Salt Lake area.

Our first stop was at the station marker for the Lookout Pass Station. Here are a couple pics from our stop there. His bike is the one on the left, and mine is on the right.




We rode a little further along the Express route, then detoured up "Little Valley". It's been years since I've been across this road / pass, and before, the road was okay - I was in my Dakota. Now, the road has been graded, so it was a piece of cake on the KLRs. I didn't take any pics until we'd joined up with Erickson Pass Road and had actually crossed over Erickson Pass. That is located in the valley between the Sheep Rock Mountains and the Simpson Range. These two pics were taken at a stop along the road. The first one has Desert Mountain in the background.

From there, we were headed toward Death Canyon at the southern end of the Simpson Range - but we made one more stop out in the middle of nowhere...


Once we went up Death Canyon, we made a stop at the Bar X Mine.








This was at the point in Death Canyon where we decided to turn around due to time constraints. We still wanted to hit up Indian Springs Canyon in the Simpson Range...


The road up Indian Springs Canyon was quite rocky - as in loose golf ball to baby-head size rocks, as well as some good ruts, steep side-slope stuff, and even a few minor water crossings. We didn't really take any pics along that area, because we didn't really stop - until my bike decided to take a rest... Her front wheel "washed out" on loose leaves / mud / with a rock or two thrown in for good measure as we were heading past Indian Springs. Her wheels were on the high side, but I was able to get her stood back up without help. By then, my son had found a spot to park his bike, and he came back down to help his old man. He took my bike to where he parked, and we took a slight break there. This is him sporting one of his dual-sport group tee shirts by an old cabin.

From there, we continued up over the pass above Indian Springs. That trail was steep, rocky, sketchy, scary, and there's no way in hell I'd have even attempted it alone... At the top we needed to take another break from the ascent.


The descent down the other side of the pass wasn't as bad as the ascent on the Indian Springs side. We went down through the canyon and ended up on Erickson Pass Road again, where we traveled north to the Pony Express Route, then east over Lookout Pass (again), and back to the highway along the Express Route. All told, it was about 150 miles, with roughly 95 of them being on dirt.

Here's my son laughing at the Pavement Ends sign. For people with a KLR, when the pavement ends, the adventure begins!
