Africa: Cape Town to Cairo

After 18 months of planning and no small amount of help from the good folk on this forum, I arrived in Cape Town this Sunday to embark on the adventure of my life time. I leave Cape Town on Saturday morning.

I have finally met my KLR, which I purchased in January 2015. I think we are going to be friends. I've spent the last couple of days making most of the modifications I needed to do in person - photos below.

[EDIT: I am struggling to attach the images. I have resized them but can't get a BBCode from Flickr (option just repeatedly freezes on a blank pop up) - so have attached URLs for now. Can anyone point me in the right direction?]

https://flic.kr/p/HJDFqp
https://flic.kr/p/HJDQqi
https://flic.kr/p/Hjh78U

Full details, including the route are in my blog http://www.temporaryescapee.wordpress.com

Cheers
Andy

Firstly looking forward to your ride report. Coincidentally I recently watched the Boorman/MacGregor wankers in Long Way Down.

As to the Flickr pictures. After some effort I was able to copy the generated [IMG] code from Flickr on my iPad and this was the result for one picture.

P1000281 by temporaryescapee, on Flickr

I then edited the generated code to just the [IMG] portion.

It doesn't help on my iPad that I have the Flickr app installed as clicking on your posted links opens the App. I hate that. I had to copy the link code in the app and then paste it into the address bar on my Safari browser and then generate the link again in the browser. Bit of a pain so I did just one picture. Maybe a better option would be to use PhotoBucket but then you are having to post your pictures twice if you want to use Flickr too. It can be done though. I will try it again later on my iMac and see what happens.

I like flickr more than I like PhotoBucket, but only because 99% of the time when I go to look at an old post on a forum (any forum) if the pictures are missing it's because they were posted from PB. I don't know why that is, it just is.

With flickr, choose the picture you want to have embedded in your post and click on it.

To the right of the photo there will be a star, a swoopy right arrow, and a download arrow.

Click onthe swoopy right arrow.

Choose "BBCode" and the size you want to display. Don't be afraid to pick a large size, as the forum will re-size them and readers can expand them.

Copy the code to your post like this:

[u rl=https://flic.kr/p/HJDQqi][i mg]https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7300/27393302345_c28f72cfe7_b.jpg[/img][/url][u rl=https://flic.kr/p/HJDQqi]P1000282[/url] by [u rl=https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/]temporaryescapee[/url], on Flickr

For a clean look, edit out the stuff in red:

[u rl=https://flic.kr/p/HJDQqi][i mg]https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7300/27393302345_c28f72cfe7_b.jpg[/img][u rl=https://flic.kr/p/HJDQqi][i mg]https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7300/27393302345_c28f72cfe7_b.jpg[/img][/url][u rl=https://flic.kr/p/HJDQqi]P1000282[/url] by [u rl=https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/]temporaryescapee[/url], on Flickr

so that you wind up with only the IMG code:

[i mg]https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7300/27393302345_c28f72cfe7_b.jpg[/img]

Your picture will appear like this:

"It sounds fiddly, but you will become quite adept at it", Tom said aptly.

That's not the fault of PhotoBucket. For whatever reason the user has chosen to either remove or move the Photos from PhotoBucket and then you get a missing picture.

In doing some research I have run across some mention of PB weirdness, cookies, and other such tech stuff.

There must be a cultural difference between flickr users and PB users. Perhaps it has to do with how the two services set up accounts.

flickr storage is now practically limitless for the average user and, even when it wasn't, flickr never deleted pictures when you hit the limit. The user of a free account just couldn't see any pictures over 200. They've since gone to 1Gb of storage for users. Screwed me up, too, as I had set up three accounts to get around the old 200 picture thing. Now I can't move them into one account because that would be deleting pictures.

Perhaps PB users find it necessary to delete pictures for space constraints. Dunno. It may be only old PB accounts where I'm seeing problems with embedded PB pictures. It's a real bummer over on the BMW forum where someone once posted good information that's now gone. BMW doesn't publish a manual for lowly owners. We have to steal stuff.

Thank goodness Haynes finally did a manual for the camheads.

I got into a tussle with a moderator over there on the subject. He was in denial about PB, then I laid about a half dozen links on him that had missing PB. Some of them were his. I have to be careful over there now, though. Motorcycle.com owns the site...

I see ADVrider.com ride reports with missing photos. They are usually a few years old.

I have been assuming that the user was no longer making yearly payments to PhotoBucket and thus the photos were not displayed. Does this sound correct?

For me PhotoBucket is a FREE service. You are allowed 2GB of free storage and 10GB/month of bandwidth. After that you have the option to pay for more space. I've got 350+ photos and a few videos on there and have only used 16% of my free allotment. There are a number of photo sharing sites. I stick with PhotoBucket because it was one of the first I signed up for. Use Flickr too but for Forum posting I find PhotoBucket to be an easy solution.

What I find is that folks move on from their current interests and then delete the relevant shots from PhotoBucket creating broken picture links.

My goodness. That didn't start well at all. Are you okay?? How's the bike?? I hope that you are okay and that this doesn't kill your trip plans.
