Pawnee National Grasslands, Colorado
Hi - I just wanted to quickly sing the praises of Colorado's eastern plains and the Pawnee National Grasslands in particular - it's not the spectacular scenery of the mountains, but it's pretty in a more low-key, nuanced way, and the back roads are like a trip into the past.
The Pawnee National Grasslands are in the North Central part of the state and hold some very scenic back roads that go through old ghost towns that were swinging...before the dustbowl of the thirties...and still contain relics of the previous inhabitants.
The area is on a high plains plateau letting you see the land and sky for a hundred miles, and the storm watching is fabulously dramatic. Lightning hits the wind generating towers to the north with an alarming frequency - which can be kind of exciting to watch.
Friendly ranchers, old ghost towns, great back roads, and lots of rattlesnakes - I would recommend a trip to this region to a friend, so I'm listing it here.
