Alaska in May

I am planning on riding to AK in early May either alone or with one other person. I was wondering if anyone has done that ride in May and if you have any advice. I have a 1999 klr with about 27k miles. I have all waterproof bags, heated and waterproof clothes. I will be in AK for about 6 or 7 weeks.

I think you might want to look at the weather in the May time frame. I am betting that early in the season you will be doing some real cold weather and some snow riding. We went in July and we still had nights when the temps were at or near freezing.

With that said... Go! It is a great ride of a life time.

I might be trying to make a late summer ride to AK sometime in August - in May I will be headed to Missoula MT from Sacramento CA. Going to be my first longer trip.

If you wait till August or something, I might meet up with you.

I start work in Wyoming on Aug 3, so I was hoping to AK early. I drove to AK last summer along a slightly different route than what I want to ride. Im from Missoula, MT and have some some winter riding, but nothing with this kind of distance. Do you recommend getting heated pants? Right now all I have is a heated vest and heated grips. All my other gear is well insulated.

I live in Alaska and have driven the highways up many times just never on a motorcyle. Its on my todo list. A few years ago I drove up an old farm truck with a dump bed that my dad had and do to my work schedule I had to do it in the middle of May. Worst trip I have ever made. It had gotten warm enough earlier in April or may to thaw the roads and they were a mess. Broken up and muddy and full of potholes and serious frost heaves (frost heaves can be fun on a motorcylce but not a 71 f700). We got into a storm half way through Canada and it dumped 12 inches or more of snow. Very slick. It then got very clear and cold behind the storm and we had temperatures of below 0 F for a day or two. It then warmed up and we got into some mud on some of the unpaved portions in the Yukon Teritory that was 4 or 5 inches deep and some of the slickest, stickiest garbage I have ever seen. Dont know how it can be slick and sticky at the same time but trust me it was. Something about the dust control chemical Canada puts on the roads. In my opinion May is to early. End of April through May is that transition time from winter to summer. (cant call it spring) You never know what you will get. First of June is the earliest I would attemt it.

Thank you bkd. Hopefully the earliest I can go is June 10th. I am riding to Moab at the end of May and maybe exploring some of CO and visiting a friend in MT before heading to AK. I don't like traveling in snow or the results of it.
