Lost Coast / Usal Road March 18/19

Heading out from Sacramento Thursday (18th) morning...taking an interesting (un decided) route which will include as much dirt as possible to Lost Coast. Will camp at Mattole River campground just out of Pertrolia OR Gold Bluffs just west of Orick (depends on Thursday's progress) Thursday night. Friday, ride and explore Shelter Cove area for the morning, head south on Usal out to Fort Bragg. Head east via dirt eventually heading home through either Clear Lake or Lake Berryessa.

Anybody interested post here or pm me.

Should be a good one. Get to break in my Wolfman Bags

Ridgerunner,
Sounds like a great ride. I am going to see if I can pull this off. I am not familiar with the area and would be riding from Cloverdale, so I would have to figure out a point to meet up with you as you head west.
I'll let you know tomorrow.

Dave

Sean,
unfortunately, I can't get the schedule to work. I would really like to do that ride, so let me know if you plan to do it again at some point. Same goes for the Death Valley trip.

Have a great ride- hopefully I'll catch you next time.

Spanked

Well, we got spanked. Pictures on the way for you entertainment.

First leg of the journey was routed from red bluff on goat trails west paralleling 36. Beautiful high speed dirt twisties, elevation changes, spectacular views...ahhhh. Until the dreaded and inevitable happened, the day i had been dreading....that is correct...A FLAT TIRE. We had everything, but neither of us had ever changed a tire with levers. Oh wait, i thought YOU had the levers...After an 80 mile journey back into red bluff for levers - and nearly t boning a 100lb wild boar (as close as you can come without hitting it) - i was back with levers. 2.5 hrs later we had the tire changed - it was 3pm, we left sac at 8am sharp. Still, we pushed on, 5 miles later Sashi lost control in some snow and wiped out almost losing his bike over a very very steep embankment. Then a bug in the eye, then a broken piece of tubular webbing (????) and a lost gas can. 9pm that night back in red bluff eating fast food we came the realization that we better call it good before something really bad happens (we were considering blasting over to the coast on 36 that night...). Anyway, LIVE AND LEARN...right

spanked photos

sashi, packed up

plenty of room with the wolfman bags

just west of red bluff, securing the load before heading into the mountains

nice road through rolling pastures...this is where i almost t boned the wild boar. not in this pick, but nice curves here.

15 miles west of red bluff...turns to dirt, looks fun.

it continued for some time

into the mountains, getting good.

view from the trail, note ridgeline singletrack and mount shasta in background. nice views.

2nd half

flat tire, 2 inch nail...see "SPANKED" thread for details.

sashi, almost lost it off the embankment...steeper than it looks.

nappy time

to much snow past here...have to find another route, 2-3 weeks out this will be good, but not dusty.

klr is bullerproof

summary of the day: high tornado like wind in the morning, flat tire, nearly t-boning a large wild boar, wreck in snow almost losing the bike off an embankment, bug to the eyeball, broken tubular webbing and a lost gas can....great scenery and fun roads. maybe next time we will make it (see "spanked" for details).

Anyone interested in revisiting the Usal Road trip? I Googled the road and saw some photos of a trip some guy did in a Landcruiser. Looks great.

Ridgerunner- how long do you think this ride would casually take? 2 days- 1 night? Wouldn't mind stretching it out a bit if possible.
