DEATH VALLEY 31 March - 5 April

Thought I would put this out there early. Planning a trip to DV for the above dates. Still in the early stages of planning. Will be getting a campsite somewhere in DV for 3 days/4 nights. Planning on 3 full days of riding. The loop I've been wanting to do should be full on. The other 2 days will be easier, suitably for larger adventure bikes (VStrom, GS etc..). I will be 2up with my gf for both of those days (still, she likes to ride, we did Steele Pass in 09).

Any advice/feedback is appreciated (best place to camp in DV).

The big day will start somewhere in DV. Head to the northern part of the park via pavement (395). Death Valley Road to Eureka Dunes (deep sand here). Eureka Dunes over Steele Pass into Saline Valley. Saline Valley to The Racetrack via Lippincott Pass. The Racetrack to Teakettle Junction to Ubehebe Crater - back to the campsite via pavement. Might avoid 395 and access Eureka Dunes via Crankshaft Crossing / Hanging Canyon (sweet paved goat trail in Hanging Canyon).

Couple people are going. Hopefully get some other KLR's out there.

Sean

Ridgerunner,
Your version of early planning is my version (includes kids and wife who is trying to make peace with multiple motorcycle & constant need to ride idea) of absolute immediacy.
You are regularly doing the rides and kind of riding that I hoped to when I chose the bike. Don't give up on posting rides here.

I'm gonna go downstairs and see how this one flies, but I am doubting that I'll be pleasantly surprised. Stand by..... This would be a good time to tell your gf how much she rocks.

Well, the stars aligned and this looks possible. Just a couple of questions:
- Are you trailering down?
- Never been to the area- how aggressive do tires need to be?
- I have general backpacking gear- need anything else special?

Let me know how it shapes up.

Hey,

Yes, trailering down. The more aggressive the better. Anything better than the stock tires will be fine. I'm running a TKC80 but it's probably overkill for everything except the deep sand. Nope, don't need anything special. We will be riding out of camp but coming back every night.

I will check on campsite availability asap.

I'll get in touch when I have more details (probably early next week).

This trip sounds good and should be good practice. The KLR I would take would be almost stock (scary). The valley should be in bloom this time of year.

Tim,
are you thinking about heading down there? That would be great if so. Not sure what my exact plan will be, but I am thinking that I should trailer down in case I do any damage to the bike. If you are considering, let me know.

Sean,
It looks like I am in. I will probably hit you up for some packing advice & such. I'll wait for your next message. Let me know what I owe for the site. I may not be able to arrive until afternoon of the 1st- not certain yet.

Looking forward to it!

Dave,

If I get it together I would truck my KLR there. Not worried about the KLR as much as I am worried about my body 8^|

I will let you know more after I get the 2003 KLR and start farkling for the off-road.

Ridgerunner,
just wanted to check in and make sure that this ride is still happening. I am still in, although have been sick and am still trying to get better before the ride.
Let me know and I will start putting things together for the trip.

Tomatocity-
Are you still thinking about heading down? Let me know if so and maybe we can drive down at the same time.

Hopefully I am in. My gear should be on its way from San Diego.

Is everyone camping or what?
