I am vertically challenged and have had issues with the KLR, so I decided to schedule a ride-in appointment over at Corbin in Hollister, CA. It took me an hour to get down there this morning and it was a great experience, so here is my tale.
I showed up at about 0815 (I was told to come between 0800 and 0900 and that it would take 6-8 hours). As I was parking my bike out front, the showroom manager/seat maker Julio opened up the garage door and told me to ride right in. I parked my bike and started talking with Julio. He took off my seat, cut down the starting foam block (already molded for the generic "Low Seat" for the KLR) and then mounted it on my bike. He told me to ride it around the building to see how I liked it. It was good, though he narrowed the front a little more to make it easier for me to touch the ground. Julio then let me choose my two leather colors/textures and the Corbin logo I wanted. At 0900, the Wizard's Cafe inside the Corbin factory opened, so I went in, had breakfast (they have a normal diner menu) and enjoyed their free coffee. By 1115, the seat was done, all mounted, and looked gorgeous. With some rope I brought, I secured the old seat to the tailrack and rode home
Anyways, the seat brings my significantly closer to the ground when I stop and is comfortable when riding. The only downside is, I got the carbon fiber leather pattern/color which looks great, but it's slicker than snot. So when I decelerate I have to squeeze the tank with my knees pretty hard to make sure I don't slide forward. I'm not sure if this issue will improve as the leather wears a little. All in all, I'm a very happy customer and even have both my heels within maybe a half inch from the ground!
And being the idiot I am, I posted it under tech days/group rides...
