Nor Cal to AZ via 395??

Hey all,

I bought a 16' KLR (black) a few months ago and have been LOVING it. It's got ~1,300 miles on the tac and is itching to go on a big trip. Now, boss says I have a week off for Thanksgiving, including the weekends, I have 9 days off total! So, I figured a proper road trip for the new bike is in order.

I plan to travel light and ride from Quincy, CA to Scottsdale, AZ via 395 on the way down, and taking 95 in NV on the trip back north.

I plan to do the ride as: 2 days down, 2/3 days back north. Been checking the weather and things look feasible.

Can anyone shed insight on the 395 route vs. 95 for this time of year? I'll be staying in hotels since I can't yet carry camping gear.

Unfortunately, I won't have a ton of time to go on detours along the way, but would greatly appreciate anything to be mindful of when travelling these routes in late November/Early December.

Thanks in advance!

I have driven and rode 395 from San Diego many times to Mammoth Lakes and north all the way into Oregon. Only rode my KLR as far as Topaz Lake and then over the sierras on 4 and back over on 108. Great highway and great views. South of Independence more desert. Watch the weather reports and you should be fine. Watch for ice very early in the morning. I always take 395 rather than I5.
I have not ridden or drove on 95.

Ah man! I just saw this thread, and I'm too late to let you know.
How was the trip?
I rode from Napa to Prescott last April via Hwy 50 to South Lake Tahoe, over the Kingsbury Grade, down 395, then out thru Death Valley.
It was AWESOME compared to Hwy 5 by any means.

Hope you had a good trip, did you post any ride pictures or report?

Hey guys!

Apologies for the major bout of AWOL. The trip from this original thread did not come to fruition..on my KLR anyway. Ended up taking the truck down to AZ to visit my cousin, her husband, and their infant boy. The family is growing quick! Not sure if I can share pictures yet, not sure if I'm up to 15 posts. I'll look into it.

In other news, I'm planning another trip (this time DEFINITELY) on the KLR and am in the planning phase. At the risk of being a little redundant, I'm going to make a new thread for this new trip so that way it will be less confusing. Thank you for the helpful advice all the same!

Hey Otter! When you do your next ride, try putting it in the Southwest region. You'll probably get more California & Arizona riders to get it.
But keep us posted no matter what please.

I'm twelve days out from heading out to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas....

Will do Camp, thanks for the tip. That's extra helpful since this trip will also take me through UT and NV. I'll def. post an RR once it's all said and done, looking forward to giving something back to the forum.

12 days out huh? That's around the same time as me, I'm leaving the 30th from the CA north coast and shooting for the 395 again. How long are you planning on being on the road? Planning on an RR?

Heading out for 3-4 weeks on the road, 4,500+ miles to see some family and ride Route 66.

Not sure where I'm going to do the ride report yet.I'll keep everyone posted somehow.
