I want Advice on Upgrading Handlebars for Better Comfort on Long Rides

Hey everyone,

I have been riding my KLR & I feel like the stock handlebars are not the most comfortable for longer rides. After a few hours on the road; I get some wrist and shoulder fatigue and I want upgrading to something that offers a more relaxed riding position.

Also I have seen a few options such as ProTaper bars and even some risers but I am not sure which setup would be best without making the bike feel weird off-road. I do a mix of highway and dirt riding so I need something that keeps things comfortable without sacrificing too much control.

For those of you who have swapped your bars, what setup worked best for you? Did you go with risers too or just a different bar bend? Any suggestion on brands or specific models that fit well without too much hassle?

Also, I have been brushing up on some python interview questions & the thought of simplifying things makes me appreciate the importance of easy adjustments—much like finding the right handlebar setup.

Thank you.:)

good luck, you are going into unchartable territory :) If you post your physical statistics members can share what they've done to set up their "rider triangle"

Bar bends are complicated to absorb and many vendors don't "measure" in the same fashion making apples to apples comparisons difficult.

If your wrists are good in terms of the "angle" you hold the bars than your sweep is proper and you just need to relocate the bars up and back/forward.

I'm 72", 180lbs, I found my sweet spot with the gen 1 factory bars up 1.25" and forward 0.75", stock peg placement. I needed my triangle "opened up".

The bestest way IMO to sort it out stand the bike upright in the basement, put your arms and hands out where you find them most comfortable and get some risers to put the factory bars there.

AND if you have the option to hand out with other cool kids are rallies or multibike rides sit on every one that they'll let you and see how they feel, you might just luck into "perfect" and have the formula ready made.

Is it a brand new bike? Or is a used bike with who knows what aftermarket bar on it?

I'll ask if you have yet simply loosened the 4 mount bolts and while setting the bike & rotate them forward or backwards a bit to change the distance from you & the Angle of the tips of the existing bars.

I HATE riding other riders bike with their handlebars which are mounted with the tips of the grips tilted Upwards, which is more comfortable, controllable Only when standing up. Makes my wrists & shoulders uncomfortable fairly shortly and sore quicker than necessary, because I'm mostly a sit-down rider unless its in technical, rough off-highway conditions.

Re-angle your hand levers tipped slightly downward and possibly rotate the electrical controls also after playing with your bar position. This allows better clutch & F. brake control when standing is necessary.

Everybody's ideal ergos and usage are different. I (and many others) find the stock bars to have far too much pullback to be comfortable. I ride offroad a fair bit so I need something that works well for sitting and standing......risers may be more comfortable for some but they are a downgrade for offroad control. I use Renthal RC-Hi's (809's) which are a good quality 7/8" alloy replacement bar. Improved ergos, less vibes and far less likely to bend. MX / Enduro - 7/8"

I've seen 100 bikes I've worked on. I've yet to have the pleasure (maybe) of riding anything with bars even close to apes. Perhaps the incredibly curvy roads we have curtails the use of apes. I get on "blue Ridge riders" in granite falls website quite often. It's a used bike dealer an hour away but off the mountain so no curves. I see a lot of bikes with apes on them that I say "I'd like to have that but they would have to put different bars on it". Lol.
