Having owned 2 klrs in the past, I am looking to purchase a 2009 that has 21,000 miles on it. The ones I had never got past 3k miles. What would most consider high mileage for a KLR ?

Why did you sell them so Young? Or HOW did you destroy them?

I RIDE a Low Mileage 1987, at 91,979 miles. 91,979 / 38 years is a mere 2420.5 miles per year average.
You need to ride more.

There is a 204,000+ mile, 2004 model on this very forum. Belongs to @Watt-man . Still on its original clutch plates, piston, rings, valves, etc.

I will say that way too many 2008 & 2009 models did have some mis-machined piston rings that did allow too much oil consumption. When run too low of engine oil they can severely damage the camshaft bearings. Best to inquire about its oil habit or lack thereof.

just got my nearly new 2014 with 118,400 miles, engine is all original. The best advice I can give is to pull the air filter and look at that, it will tell a LOT about how the bike has been maintained (assuming its not brand new for the sale) if it has a K&N filter, turn and run. If it has a foam filter that's obviously been oiled with the wrong oil (like K&N oil) turn and run. if you can see dust staining on the clean air side. run. if there's excessive engine oil condensation from the crank breather. run.

How much?

Like PDwestman said the 08/09 is a oil burner I bought an 08 with 45,000 miles on it but the guy was the original owner and had put a big bore 685 kit in, mainly to fight oil consumption. I would have bet my bottom dollar that guy hadn't run it low on oil, he was a commuter and he kept meticulous records down to adjusting the chain and tire tread depths. I was right, the cam bearings were pristine. At the time I got a lot of nice ad ons and a $1500 price break because of the mileage. but that was 2011. That bikes now has 85,000 miles and none of the last 40,000 were anywhere near easy, and that bike has never failed to get me home. So I wouldn't be afraid of mileage so much as maintenance, it is real easy to run one of those 08,09 oil consuming bikes low on oil. Which is why I say how much is it, there are much newer lower mileage gen 2's out there for under $3000, gen 3's can be found for under $4000. and of course you can put $2500 worth of stuff on a KLR real easy suspension, brakes, luggage, big bore, pipe,
