The first thing I would check is the speedometer cable; perhaps it broke.

The second thing I would check is the speedometer drive on the front wheel. Sometimes folks will not align the tang on the drive with the slot in the wheel when reinstalling the front wheel. When this occurs the speedometer may work for a short period of time before the speedometer drive succumbs to damage and quits working.

i had the cable come off at the wheel and eject its contents.

 

I’ve had the Speedo cable come loose on the back of the cluster and then drop out.

 

Has the front wheel been removed recently?

 

Pull the front wheel
Is the washer on the gear flat or bent?
If it’s bent beat it flat
Reinstall properly

 

IF you need to inspect the speedo drive unit, DO NOT wash the grease out of it. Most people do not get them re-greased properly, read this entire thread. Its not too long.

2008 Speedometer drive repair

I had the speedometer go out on me around 12-14K miles ago, and found that the actual speedometer failed in the cluster. I found one on CL and bought it, put a sticker on the face to correct the mileage, etc. Last week it started bouncing again, and reading 50 MPH while my GPS was showing 65...

Turns out that the hub of the front wheel essentially exploded. like $1000 to get a new hub and then the wheel re laced and trued. Currently on the hunt for a solid used front wheel.

 

There are a few on ebay.

 

Just purchased one that looks solid.

 

The reason the lip on the hub broke is because the speedo gear locked up.
The worm gear in the housing wears into the softer metal of the housing.
RMATV sells it for around$75, the whole assembly, Speedo hub with new gears.

 

Damn! I think the mechanic said the whole hub was shot. If not I think I'll try and send it back and order what you've recommended. Thanks a lot.

 

The aluminum flange with 2 notches was Probably RIPPED completely off the wheel hub by the locked-up speedometer drive assembly.
You will probably need BOTH!

Yeah the hub is ruined, I had to be patient but I found a used low mile gen 2 on eBay last year.
