03 with milky oil

Just got my "new to me" 03 started today. It's been sitting for over 1.5 years. Bike ran great, made good power, no funky noises...I put probably 15 miles on it and pulled it back into the shop with the intent of changing the oil. One look at the sight glass made me concerned... then confirmed when I pulled the drain plug.
Very milky, thin oil.
The coolant didn't seem low though...
I pulled off the water pump cover, impeller, and the spring/seal behind it. Is this all there is to rebuilding the water pump? A small cover gasket, and a spring/seal?
I'm hoping this was the issue..just seemed like too much water in the oil for it to be condensation.

Ideas? Opinions?

Change oil and try again.. If it's milky the second time, you've got a bad water pump seal..

If the prior owner was one of those, "I'll start it and let it idle for 15 minutes to charge the battery" type, then it's just condensation from the oil never getting warm enough to evaporate the moisture in the crankcase..

Just change the oil and then see if the milky oil comes back.. Too many options with only 15 miles on it after sitting to start making repair decisions..

Guys.. thanks so much for the replies..

However;

My wife has called me a "Bulldog" on many occasions.... she might be right.

As soon as I saw milky oil, I immediately thought "coolant in the oil".. I called a tech/buddy, and he said it was most likely the water pump..

So I took it apart. Seals look good.

While I was sitting there staring at the seals...two things dawned on me;
1.) the coolant level was not low when I removed the radiator cap.
2.) The first thing I did Saturday nite when the bike arrived, was to hook the breather line back up to the bottom of the air filter housing...

ie; Bike sits for years outside.... WITH breather line unhooked ... open to the sky....

DUH! Water in the oil.

I put the waterpump back together, and am now on my second oil change...it's gettin better.

Thanks though! :t1202:

Holy crap... sometimes I really piss myself off...:50:

There must've been quite a bit of H2O in there... still have some milky stuff.. gonna run it a bit more, then add some seafoam to the crankcase & drop it again..
On a brighter note, my waterpump doesnt leak.... love that Hondabond stuff! :)

Are you using a synthetic oil? I found Mobil 1 synthetic gets a white foam for the first 2-300 miles. I had an old pickup that would do the same thing to quake and shake.:) Best oil I've found for the KLR so far has been valvoline 10w40 motorcycle oil. Engine runs better and less noise, at least that's what I tell myself. lol

Interesting observation;
I.... Like any newbie, hooked up on what looked like the top two forums on (in this case, KLR's)
The "other" forum had 22 views with the same thread.... And NO replies.

Thanks again y'all!

Yup. Things here are pretty sweet. I haven't been to the 'other KLR forum' in a long, long time.

Well.. tonite I'm gonna warm it up a bit, then drop the oil again.. might do it twice. The second time I'll add some seafoam to the mix.. get it good and warm... probably blast around the block a couple times, then drop it again.
Then fresh Castrol + new filter... hopefully most of the water is gone by then..
